Another day, another Drama - Yard Signs

The Vinton City Council held a General Government Committee Meeting on Thursday evening. On the agenda was a lengthy discussion concerning the placement of yard signs in the right of way. For years it's been a rule/ordinance/law that signs of ANY KIND are not allowed in the right of way.The clamp down on placement of signs in the right of way, came about after several signs were placed along the streets, like a flood of them Good on the sign producers for finding that many people to place signs.

Vinton's changing landscape

1st St. West is still under construction It has been another productive summer and fall around Vinton!On the west end of town, we've watched a couple of developments happening. The largest and one that impacts a lot of people every day is the paving of West 1st Street. It looks like it's been moving quickly, for the most part, but then I don't live on that street. I'm sure residents in that area might disagree with my assessment!We also added an Auto Zone on that end of town as well this summer.

Vinton PD partners with Pink Heals to raise funds

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Vinton Police Department is selling pink patches for $5 each to help support Pink Heals of Eastern Iowa. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to Pink Heals Eastern Iowa to help with their projects.The Pink Heals fire truck came to Vinton from Sauk Valley, Illinois, in 2017. Dennis Bramow had organized the visit for his wife Diana a cancer survivor.

Wednesday afternoon field fire brings another quick response from the VFD

The Vinton Fire Deparment responds to a field fire south of Vinton A fire at the farm of Wayne and Sharon Rhinehart brought the Vinton Fire Department. Around 2:00 p.m. a call came in from Wayne about a fire in his field. Wayne was baling when he noticed a large bale on fire in the field. He looked behind him to see the baler that he was pulling was also on fire. He quickly detached the baler from the tractor sparing the tractor from damage.

Providing supplies of food to feed families in need is something that they take to heart. The food pantry gladly accepts donations of food and monetary donations. Area Pig Farmers featured in Virtual FarmChat

Iowa elementary students invited to learn with pigs Iowa elementary school students will have the chance to learn about life on a pig farm through a virtual visit on Thursday, October 26. The Iowa Pork Producers Association is working with the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF) to host a "Learning with Pigs Farmchat®". Students can join IALF's Education Program Coordinator Alex Osborn virtually as she tours the Benton County pig farm of Todd and Denise Wiley.

The Vinton swimming pool slide slips away into the past

Vinton Park's and Rec is in the process of upgrading the pool For a long time the condition of the slide was such that it needed to be replaced. Last week in a lengthy process, the slide was taken down. The operation took longer than I had expected it to. With a lot of chainsawing, metal cutting and maneuvering with the crane, the slide was finally taken down over the course of the week.

V-S FFA Members Explore Opportunities at Hawkeye Ag Day

Bri Dulin) By: Co-Reporter, Juliana LuisTuesday, September 26 was a big day for Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members. 9 members signed up to attend Hawkeye Ag Day eager to learn more about different parts of agriculture. When the members made it to the event they were split up into groups and put into different stations covering various aspects of the field. Some of the stations included fire safety control, learning about a ruminant digestive system, and meat preparation safety.
