Solon continues trend of dominance; defeats Vikings, 69-49

Grant Sagan attempts a first half layup vs. Solon.     Solon (18-2) came to Vinton with a coach (Brad Randall) who won his 300th career game early in the 2010-11 season, another coach (Acie Earl) whose resume includes playing basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and three players on their roster who are taller than the tallest Viking. The Spartans did what they have done 90 percent of the time this year: They won.

Vikettes defeat Union; to face Knights again in Regional opener

Allison Emrich and Makenzie Westendorf work to move the ball inside.        The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes will begin Regional play against the same team they faced in their last regular season game.      The girls will travel to La Porte City to play Union at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. They defeated Union, 35-28, Thursday, Feb. 10, in Vinton.      The Vikettes end their regular season with a 10-11 record.

Senior Night: VS girls celebrate years of playing together

VSHS seniors have played together for years.      Vikette seniors and their parents received recognition for their years of commitment to the Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball program.    Since they were students at Tilford Middle School, the girls have been playing together. A photo on a display set up outside the gym shows a team that includes all of the 2011 seniors at a tournament for 8th graders in 2006, with coach Deb Hanneman.

Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener moved to Benton County Speedway

  VINTON, Iowa (Feb. 10) – The JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour will now open its 2011 season at Benton County Speedway. Tour officials and track management have officially announced that the first event in the series for IMCA Modifieds will be held in Vinton on Tuesday, May 10. “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were forced to find a new home for the opener,” explained Tour Director Bucky Doren.

Vikings defeat Independence, 59-45; plan Pink Night Friday

Class 3A assist leader Logan Williams scored 9 and fed his teammates 7 assists Tuesday vs. Indee.     The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings recovered from a couple of minor ankle injuries in time to compete against Independence Tuesday night in Vinton. The Vikings defeated the Mustangs, 59-45, in WaMaC West action.      Starting center Brody Beatty was recovering from a minor sprain, and reserve Jake Milroy returned to action several weeks after suffering a sprain that was originally diagnosed as a broken bone.

Special Populations Bowling Outing Winners

2011 Special Population Award Winners   Our annual Special Populations Bowling outing was held on Friday, February 4th.   Every participant enjoyed having the opportunity to bowl two games at Berry's Lanes before heading out to Pizza Ranch for lunch immediately afterwards.    Pictured above are the winners of the 5 awards given out.

Seeing America in the Super Bowl

       The daughter of an immigrant from Ecuadorwho lived through some difficult times was singing, while a big, strong man wiped a tear from his eye.        To me, when I cover sporting events, I pay as much attention to what’s going on in the stands as I do to what is going on between the white lines (or in basketball season, the black lines).

Pink Night for Vikettes; V-S girls defeat CCA

Vikettes wore pink ribbons in their hair to honor breast cancer survivors.     Players on both teams wore pink in their hair, and the Vinton-Shellsburg girls wore black and pink warm-up suits Friday when they hosted Clear Creek-Amana on the basketball court at VSHS.     Continuing a tradition, the Vikettes are raising money again this year to fight breast cancer. The pink basketball used for tipoff was raffled; raising $200.

Cheer on your 5th & 7th grade Vikes

  5th grade and 7th grade boys basketball teams will host a tournament this Saturday at the V/S High School.    The 5th grade teams will play in the morning starting at 8 am, with teams visiting from around the metro area.  The 7th grade will follow in the afternoon.    A wide assortment of
