VS Baseball team seeks 7-year-old players
The Vinton Softball/Baseball Corp is looking for 3-4 players to play on our 7 year old baseball team for this upcoming summer. The team will practice 1-2 times a week and play a 12 game schedule during May and June. Cost to play is $50 plus uniform cost. Hogan begins 2013 racing season with checkered flag at Lee County
Vinton race car driver Scott Hogan won his first race of the season, starting from the front row, regaining the lead on several restarts, and taking the IMCA Modified checkered flag Friday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnelson in southeast Iowa.
Like other parts of Iowa, Lee County had been under winter weather for the past few weeks; on Monday, crews removed snow from the track. BC Speedway car show downtown Saturday; first races Sunday
The Benton County Speedway season starts with a car show in downtown Vinton and practice to follow at the fairgrounds on Saturday, March 30th.
The fourth annual car show, brought to you by the RonDaVoo, will be from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on 5th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Everyone is welcome to come see the cars up close and vote for their favorites. Frostbuster to include five classes of race cars April 7
Five IMCA divisions will see action on Sunday, April 7, in Benton County Speedway’s Frostbuster special.
IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds race for $1,000 to win in their 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier.
IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods for $400 and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $250.
Winter weather affects first VSHS 'spring' athletic events; schedule listed
The winter weather has already affected the first two track and field events for Vinton-Shellsburg High School athletes.
The Vikings and Vikettes were not able to participate in the indoor WaMaC meet March 18, at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. The girls were en route when bad roads forced the bus driver to turn around; coach Aric Chvala and the administrative staff then decided not to send the boys team, either.

Vikings Grant Sagan, Max Kearns earn All-State honors
Vinton-Shellsburg basketball players Grant Sagan and Max Kearns, who led the Vikings and most of the rest of the state in scoring and assists this season, have been named to the Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Basketball Team.
Sagan is a first-team pick; Kearns is on the Second Team.

State Basketball: Harlan defeats Vikings with size, free throws
First, Harlan got to state by defeating the second-ranked Class 3A basketball team.
On Tuesday, they knocked off No. 1.
Harlan ended the Vinton-Shellsburg dream of a perfect state championship season with a 67-56 win over the Vikings Tuesday at the state basketball tournament.
Led by 6-foot, six-inch junior Trey Lansman, the Harlan Cyclones blocked seven Vinton-Shellsburg shots and out-rebounded the Vikings, 35-28. Players say coach Johnson is teaching them to succeed on and off the court
One year ago today, Vinton-Shellsburg Basketball coach Joe Johnson was named the 2012 WaMaC West Basketball Coach of the Year, joining three players -- then-juniors Grant Sagan, Max Kearns and Max Griffith on the All-Conference First Team.
That celebration was tainted with disappointment, as the Vikings had lost two days earlier to Western Dubuque in the Sub-State final.
