Vikings learn new district pairings for next two seasons

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings football team will spend the next two years as the most southern team in a district that again stretches north to as far as Decorah. The Iowa High School Athletic Association re-assigns new districts every two years, and has recently announced the districts for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. The Vikings will be in District 3 in Class 3A, along with Charles City, Crestwood-Cresco, Decorah, Independence, Waverly-Shell Rock and West Delaware-Manchester.

Winter sports season winding down; Neal 8th at State Wrestling Meet

Michael Neal placed 8th in the state competition The Vinton-Shellsburg athletic department is winding down its winter sports season. The boys basketball loss at Xavier on Monday ended the hoops season.  Two state events took place in the past few days. Michael Neal finished in 8th place at 152 pounds to be the only medalist for Vinton-Shellsburg at the State Wrestling meet. At the State Bowling Tournament, VS junior Alyssa Bunge competed in the first year of the renewed VS bowling program.

Vikette bowler Alyssa Bunge qualifies for State

The revived Vinton-Shellsburg High School bowling team is celebrating a successful first season and even sending one competitor to the State event next week.   Alyssa Bunge led the Vikette girls at Tuesday's District meet, rolling a 193/198/391. She is one of 18 girls who will compete in the Class 1A individual cometition.  Coach Amber Pattee said it is exciting to see Alyssa achieve this accomplishment in her first year of high school bowling.

V-S bowlers end regular season on high note at Oelwein

The Vinton-Shellsburg bowlers ended their regular season at Oelwein on Friday, where the varsity boys won again and the varsity girls exceeded their average by nearly 300 pins.  Jacob Bunge led the varsity boys team by shooting 233-245 for a season high 478.  "This was a great way to finish off our regular season," said Coach Amber Pattee.

On to State: Viking wrestlings Hyland, Wehage and Neal advance

Nick Hyland advanced to State at 132 with his first place finish. Three of the four Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers who advanced to the District wrestling match earned a spot in the Class 2A Individual State Wrestling Tournament by finishing first or second during district competition in Marion on Saturday. Nick Hyland (132) and Michael Neal (152) finished first. Max Wehage (113) came in second. Heavyweight Steve Henry finished fourth.

Vikette basketball team honors three players on Senior Night

Sr. Sara Jorgensen with her parents Pat & Nancy Jorgensen The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes honored three basketball players, one senior manager, and their parents at the recent Senior Night.  The players are Sara Jorgensen, Ashley McKenna and Bethany Stainbrook; the senior manager is Kaitlyn Booth.

Viking swimmers set many personal bests at season-ending District Meet

Facing Mason City, Decorah and five Mississippi Valley Conference schools we finished eight, not too far behind Waterloo East and Cedar Falls.  The boys capped a good season with another strong performance marked by continued, significant improvement.  Out of the 26 swims on the day we registered 18 new personal best times.  The 200 Medley Relay team of Senior Matt Lash, Freshman Ryan Levis, Junior Anthony Dickerson and Junior Jordan Evans medaled with a 6th place finish.

Four Viking wrestlers advance to Districts

Michael Neal - 1st at 152 Four Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers placed first or second at the ectional Wrestling Meet at Union High School on Saturday, February 8. They included first place winners Nick Hyland (132 pounds) and Michael Neal (152); and second-place winners Max Wehage (113) and Stevie Henry (heavyweight).   All four  qualified for the District Wrestling Meet at Marion this Saturday, February 15.

Senior Night: VS bowlers win all three contests vs. Waterloo Columbus

Alyssa Bunge led the Vikette bowlers with a 173/339 performance. Jacob Gosse ended his last game with a turkey – three strikes in a row, for those of you unfamiliar with bowling terminology – and scored a team high 203 during Friday’s final home contest of the season. Gosse and Nick Stein (198/367) led the Vinton-Shellsburg varsity boys with a 203 game/400 series as the Vikings continued their winning ways, defeating Waterloo Columbus,  2871-2447 The Viking JV team also won, 2345-1983.
