Viking bowlers rally for win vs. Marion

The varsity boys came from a hundred pin deficit to Marion to come back and beat them by 83 pins after the Baker games on Friday, Jan. 10.  This team goes the extra mile all the time and will continue to improve as the season progresses. Great High Games - Cole Garwood 265 and Nick stein 245.   The varsity girls did not fare as well in the standings but they really performed well and continue to improve everyday.

Waterloo East swimmers edge VS in IBSSS pool

Senior Matt Lash competes in Thursday's meet vs. Waterloo East. "We swam great, but lost 47-46," said VS boys swimming coach Rob Levis of the team's meet in Vinton Thursday. The Vikings competed against Waterloo East in the Iowa Braille School pool, where all home meets take place.  The V-S 320-yard freestyle relay team was among the first-place finishers for V-S. That team included Anthony Dickerson, Jonah Blix, Jordan Evans and Matt Lash.

Viking bowling teams continue winning

Jordan Schoettmer, with a high game (226) and high two-game series (399), led the Vinton-Shellsburg bowlers to victory over Independence Friday, in Vinton. Alyssa Bunge had the high scores for the varsity girls team (172 and 330). Tyler Rasmussen (187 and 353) led the boys JV team. "We got off to a slow start for most of the bowlers but they rallied together and were able to excel once again at all levels.

Shep earns Victory No. 750

Former VS coach Harold Shepherd earned his 750th win when WD defeated Independence on Friday. Only three girls basketball coaches in Iowa history have led their teams to more wins than Harold Shepherd. The Vinton resident and long-time Vinton and Vinton-Shellsburg coach earned his 750th career win on Friday night with his current team. Ben Wood wins Zippy Midget - Jr./Sr Jet bowling event

Ben Wood received the first place trophy after Saturday's bowling event. Today, Berry's Lanes hosted the 13th Annual Zippy Midget-Jr/Sr Jet 8-9 Pin Bowling Tournament sponsored by Coots Material.  Thirty-four bowlers participated in the bowling tournament.  This tournament enables the Zippy Midget members to receive a strike for hitting down eight pins in their first ball.  The Jr/Sr Jets get a strike if they hit down 9 pins in their first ball.

Vikings defeat Independence; Vikettes lose to Mustangs in Independence

Anna Sagan led the Vikettes in scoring Tuesday in Independence. Both Vinton-Shellsburg varsity basketball teams are 2-3 on the season after last night's games vs. Independence. The Vikings built an early lead vs. the Mustangs in Vinton, and won 61-56. The Vikettes, however, struggled early, and were down 12-0 before scoring their first two points of the game with one second left in the first period. They played the Mustangs evenly over the next three frames, but lost at Independence, 41-32.

Vikettes at .500; to play for first time in new Independence gym tonight

Four games into the new season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes have already doubled their win total from last year. V-S is 2-2 heading into tonight's game at Independence. A 50-32 win at Wapsie Valley last year was its only victory of the season. "It's going well, as I thought it would," said coach Deb Schirm. "They worked hard over the summer, the play well together and they are shooting the ball well.

Area bowlers advance to State Family Double Tournament

In October, many youth bowlers along with one of their parents participated in a local competition to advance to the USBC District Family Double competition.  Each team of bowlers complete three games of bowling and their bowling score and handicap is added together to reach their total team score.  The highest score wins in each age and category.

Vikettes win at Beckman, 64-61, in OT

Three of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes' first four basketball games have been decided by three points or less. That includes Friday's 64-61 overtime victory at Dyersville Beckman.  The Vikettes were down by four at half-time, and rallied to tie the game late in the fourth. They then outscored Beckman by three in overtime.  Sophomore Maci Griffith led the Vikettes with 23 points.
