Home streak ends as Vikes lose to Williamsburg, 42-27

Nolan Sagan led Vikings with 13, but they lost to Williamsburg Friday in Vinton. The Viking basketball home winning streak is over. Six-foot-nine Williamsburg senior Matt Heitmann and the rest of the Raider defense made scoring tough all night -and virtually impossible in the final nine minutes -- for the Vikings in their home opener.  Williamsburg led 27-25 with a minute to go in the third, and kept the Vikings to just 2 points for the rest of the game, defeating the Vikings 43-27.

'The Barn' now offers VS softball players year-round practice facility

Dozens of VS softball players have been working out in 'The Barn' with Dave Cornell as instructor. Vinton-Shellsurg athletes are busy in December competing in the traditionally-named "winter" sports, basketball, wrestling and swimming. Now, however, softball is becoming a winter activity for dozens of V-S girls, from fourth grade through high school. For the past few months, athletes have been going to "The Barn," an old, two-story, red farm building on the Cornell farm.

Shepherd earns first victory at Vinton as opposing coach

Ashley McKenna looks for room to drive to the basket. Harold Shepherd's basketball team won at Vinton on Tuesday, something that happened hundreds of times over three decades.   But Tuesday's win was Coach Shepherd's first in Vinton leading an opposing team. His West Delaware Hawks jumped to an early 14-2 lead and outscored the Vikettes 24-9 in the third quarter en route to a 67-37 win.

New look as Vikings begin basketball season tonight

A year after the historic undefeated season and its first appearance at the state tournament since 1996, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team begins a season without most of the key players from last year’s squad. Grant Sagan, Max Kearns, Max Griffith, Chris Merchant, Kelyn Rickels and Taylor Dinderman have graduated, leaving Chase Overton and Nolan Sagan as the current seniors with most game experience.
