Vikettes sending four individuals, 4 x 200 team to state

This group of VSHS athletes will represent the school at the State Track Meet this weekend. The following Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team members, including sophomores Lily Horst, Bristi Gerber and Maci Griffith, earned a trip to the State Track Meet this coming Thursday-Saturday, with their strong performances in the District meet on Thursday:  3000-Lily Horst  1500- Lily Horst  200- Payton Leonard  400- Payton Leonard 800- Bristi Gerber Long Jump- Maci Griffith 4x200- Dawne Schminke, Payton Leonard, Sydney Robertson, & Lodorshae Mull.

On to State! Vikings overcome rain, cold to set season bests at District event

On to State: Senior hurdler Jacob Bunge is among many Viking qualifiers. Last night was a very special night for the Vinton-Shellsburg Boys track team, says coach Aric Chvala. “The cold and rain in Tama didn't stop the Vikings from performing the best they had all season,” said the coach. “There were incredible performances all night long.' The coach praised his athletes for their strong showing: Derek Dinderan and Jordan Evans began the string of Viking successes in the 3200.

Tandy leads Vikettes at S. Tama

Freshman Lindsey Miller made her varsity debut at S. Tama. Playing without two varsity golfers, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes finished in seventh place at the Sout. Vikettes defeat Benton 5-1; improve record to 7-4

Brrrr... Vikettes try to stay warm during half-time of soccer win at Benton. The VS girls soccer team is "doing great," says coach Dave Cornell, after the Vikettes' 5-1 win at Benton Thursday evening, where they played on an artificial turf like the one athletic leaders hope to have installed in Vinton in the near future. We've won 4 out of the last 5 and are now 7-4 on the season.," said the coach, who added that the weather was again an issue for both teams.

Garwood leads Red Cedar Shooters to home win

A couple Saturdays after rolling a perfect 300 in the Iowa youth bowling tournament, Cole Garwood achieved another perfect score in a different sport.  Garwood was the Top Shot for the Red Cedar Shooters last Saturday in their home meet vs. Delaware County.  It was another great day for the Red Cedar Shooters, with some outstanding individual performances too, said coach Jeff Tilson.

Vikette soccer improves to 6-4 with 5-1 win at Anamosa

Abby Gloede The Vinton Shellsburg girls soccer team upped its season record to 6-4 with a 5-1 win over the the Anamosa Raiders on Tuesday, May 13th in Anamosa. Lyndsey Cornell, Maci Griffith, Emily Reisch and Grace Milroy each scored a goal and one goal was scored from a deflection off a kick from Grace.  Ashley McKenna and Ellie Lane each had one assist and Grace Milroy had two.

Sophomores Kilpatrick, Tandy lead Vikettes at Wamac Super Meet

The VS Vikettes, playing on a course which none of them had ever seen before, finished in 10th place in the Wamac Super Meet in Solon on May 12. Sophomores Kaiti Kilpatrick (91) and Lauren Tandy (93) led the Vikettes. Janssen, Stueck lead Vikings to 6th place at Wamac Super Meet

The VS boys golf team placed 6th at the WaMaC Super meet Monday in Manchester. The boys played at Pin Oak Links in tough conditions including about an hour rain delay. The tournament started in a drizzle then turned to a downpour causing the golfers to be pulled from the course to one of four safe shelters around the course. After the lightning was gone, the course was tough with winds and thick rough holding the fresh water.

Victory vs. Anamosa; Viking golf team improves record to 25-13

Austin Bohnsack The Viking golf team beat Anamosa Tuesday at Wildcat to improve their record to 25 wins. The meet was a little colder than expected but the team carded some very good scores. Tyler Stueck led the Vikings and was the medalist with 38. Bryce Shaw was the runner up medalist with 39. The Viking team shot 160 winning the dual meet over Anamosa who shot 168.

VSMS 7th grade girls win Vikette Invitational; 8th graders take 5th place

Maddie Earhardt won in hurdles and did well in other Little Vikette events. The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School seventh grade girls were big winners in their home Vikette Invitational Track Meet, finishing with 132 points, 26 more than second-place Center Point Urbana. Those placing for the 7th grade Vikettes included: Olivia Coder, second place, 100M and fifth place, long jump; Sarah Schminke, first place 200M and long jump; and third place, 400M; Libbie Timmerman, second place, 200M and sixth place, 400M; Grace Horst, first place, 800M second place, 1500M, and third place, high jump; Maddie Earhardt, first place, 100M hurdles and 200M hurdles and second place, high jump; Alissa Hendryx, third place, 100M hurdles; and Claire Smith, 6th place, discus.
