Final week to visit the pool

The Vinton Community Swimming pool is now in its final week so be sure to stop by to take one last dip before the summer comes to an end. We will be on our regular pool hour schedule all the way through Saturday, August 16th.   On Sunday, August 17th, the pool will be hosting its annual Doggie Dip from 1 PM - 4 PM to conclude the pool season.

XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour seeks first repeat winner at Vinton, Tipton

IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds race for $1,000 to win in a pair of XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour shows next week. Series features at Benton County Speedway in Vinton on Monday, Aug. 18 and at Cedar County Raceway in Tipton on Tuesday, Aug. 19 are qualifying events for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot and pay a minimum of $150 to start.

Alumni Softball: Former players reunite, raise money for current program

Alumni softball:Ashley Strong got a faceful of dust, but scored to help the black team win. The second annual Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Softball game took place on Saturday night at Thole Field, where the Vikettes play their home high school games. The Black Team jumped to a quick 6-0 lead, scoring five runs in the first before anyone got out. But the gold team rallied for the lead, 15-14. A ninth inning rally gave the Black team the lead, and they won the 10-inning game 16-15.

VPRD lists winners of Kids Triathlon

The following are the results from the Kids Triathlon hosted by the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department on Saturday, July 26. Participants swam, biked and ran distances suitable for their age group and competed against those of the same gender. This event serves as a great orientation to the sport of triathlon, what triathlons entail for training and a sense of achievement upon completion.

Junior Golfer of the Year: C.R. Optimists honor Viking Tyler Stueck

On Monday July 28th, Tyler was presented with the Golfer of the Year Award from the Cedar Rapids Optimist Junior Golf Association (CROJGA) in the 15-18 year old boys division. Tyler competed in 5 different tournaments in Cedar Rapids this summer.  Each tournament was an 18-hole event consisting of around 25 boys in his age group. Golfer of the Year was determined by the individual who scored the most points by placing in each of these tournaments.

Three Vikings earn Wamac baseball recognition

Tyler Rippel, Luke Moen and Aaron Henderson received Wamac honors in baseball this summer. Senior Luke Moen led the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings on the Wamac West All-Conference team; Moen, who also pitched for the Vikings, was named to the second team. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Rippel and junior catcher Aaron Henderson were among the Vikings earning Honorable Mention.  See a complete summary of the Wamac Conference, with standings and complete All-Conferrence lists, HERE.

Hill, Lansing Kee earn spot in 1A Softball Championship Game

Liz Hill's Lansing Kee softball team struggled at times in its Class 1A State semi-final game vs. AGWSR today, but held on for a 3-1 win. The Kee Hawks and Coach Hill will play for the State Championship at 10 a.m. on Friday in Fort Dodge. The Kee Hawks committed three errors and pitcher Kendra Cooper allowed one earned run on five hits.

Great week for former Vikette Hill: Coach of Year honors and round 1 State win

Coach Liz Hill holds her youngest #1 fan, nephew Kalen Scott Hill, son of Ryan & Lena. Two days ago, former Vinton-Shellsburg and Mount Mercy softball standout Liz Hill was named the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Class 1A Northeast District Coach of the Year. Also honored on that All-District team were Kendra and Courtney Cooper, Liz's 8th and 9th-grade cousins and Lansing Kee pitchers; as well as Kee junior Valerie Meyer.

Vikings end season with heart-breaking District loss, 3-2

Ahead of Clear Creek-Amana, 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Vinton Shellsburg Vikings allowed two runs and ended their season on the short end of a 3-2 score in the District championship game. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Rippel held the Clippers to two earned runs; he also had a productive game at the plate, scoring both of the Vikings' runs.

Hogan among racers on Fast Shafts All-Star Race ballot

Winning in Davenport put Scott Hogan on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational race ballot. Scott Hogan is again on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational race, which takes place in Boone on Sept. 5. Hogan is among more than 40 Modified drivers in the North Central Region. Three drivers from each region will be selected from voting that takes place this week; 13 more total participants will be selected in round two, which begins July 29.
