Students at Tilford and Shellsburg Elementary Schools Raise over $1500 for Books

Students at Tilford and Shellsburg elementary schools raised more than $1500 in donations during a special book fair collection drive held October 3rd-October 7th. The money was collected for the school through the One for Books® program created by Scholastic Book Fairs. The donations, mostly in the form of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars from students and families, were used to purchase books for the classroom libraries.

Craft/Bake Sale brought variety of items to Vinton

Fish made from 2-liter bottles were featured at the VPRD craft sale.      The annual Vinton Parks and Rec Department Craft and Bake Sale took place Saturday at the Skate Center. Several vendors sold baked items and a variety of crafts, including many they had made with their own hands.             Celia Hartz, the mother of Tilford music teacher Connie Zenk, was there with the wreaths she has made.

2012 Boomtown tentatively set for August; Junior Pyros fill the sky over Bar-Y

Tayten Freidhof, Jessolyn Blackert and Mitchell Anderson built this 1,000-shell fireworks display.      The familiar echoes of fireworks from the Bar-Y farm echoed across Vinton Saturday evening as the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association members held their last meeting of the year at Chuck Yedlik's place.      The group discussed this year's Boomtown, and tentatively set the last weekend in August of 2012 for next year's Boomtown.

Cold Case: Who killed Charles Plucar? Benton County farmer was murdered in '77

The property where Charles Plucar was murdered is now the home of his great-nephew, Cecil Gilbert.       Sloping hills, rolling pastures and steep ravines form the landscape of the river valleys in Benton County, where many of the farmsteads built by the first settlers still stand.     The remaining buildings, as old as the tombstones in the pioneer cemeteries that dot the landscape, still serve as homes, barns and workshops for the people who live and work the land their ancestors first saw more than a century ago.

V-S in need of used instruments

Dear Vinton-Shellsburg Community School Patrons:  The Vinton-Shellsburg School Band Programs are asking for community help. The enrollment of students in the Vinton-Shellsburg Bands has increased significantly throughout the years, and we are currently experiencing a shortage of school owned instruments in the band program. This poses a particular problem at the 5th Grade Band or beginner level.

Sherriff's department participates in Operation Night Owl traffic program

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office participated in the Operation Night Owl October 28 and October 29, 2011 This project is part of a grant from the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau. Sheriff Randy Forsyth received a 2011-2012 grant that provides $4,900.00 for radars and Alco-Sensors; $500.00 for training and educational materials; and $16,400.

Boswell plans to visit Vinton Tuesday morning

  Congressman Leonard Boswell (IA-3) will be in Vinton on Tuesday, November 8 to visit with county officials and tour the law enforcement center at apprximately 9:30 a.m.
