Remembering 2011: The Year of the Storm

     As news organizations approach the end of the year, they look back on the big stories of the last 365 days.       For the residents of the Vinton, Garrison, Urbana and Dysart areas, there is not much doubt or disagreement about the biggest story of 2011: The July 11 storm. While there were no serious injuries, the 130+ mph winds caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and destroyed thousands of trees.

ALLIANT ENERGY FOUNDATION DONATES TO GARRISON EMERGENCY SERVICES

Alliant Energy has donated to the Garrison Emergency Services Relief Fund.   The Alliant Energy Foundation recently made a $2,000 contribution to the Garrison Emergency Services Relief Fund.  The fund was created by the U.S Bank following the July 11 windstorm disaster that leveled the Garrison Emergency Services Building.  All donations to the fund are being used by the Garrison Fire Department and First Responders in their rebuilding effort.

Preparing another generation of leaders: Many still find first job at Fareway

      Lou Lyons, Mark Timmer, Craig Hackbarth, and now Dave Kelchen have been managers of the Vinton Fareway store where almost every day one or more Vinton area teenagers seek a job. For more than a half century young people have looked to the local Fareway for their first employment opportunity, and Kelchen understands how important this ritual is to those teens, to the store, its patrons, and the community.

Shellsburg Mayor-Elect Joyce Pence dies; service set for Friday, at Wildcat

Joyce Pence speaks during a Shellsburg candidates forum; the Mayor-Elect died Dec. 23. The city of Shellsburg has lost one of its friends -- and its mayor elect. Joyce Pence died on Friday, Dec. 23, at age 70. A memorial service will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Wildcat Golf Club. Burial will be in Rector Chelsea Cemetery. Elected as Mayor in November, Joyce would have begun that job in January. She has also been a manager and co-founder of the Shellsburg Farmers Market and an active member of the Shellsburg Area Community Group.

Holiday weekend fires damage two area homes

Firefighters responded to an apparent electrical fire at Joanne Roster's home on Christmas Eve.      Joanne Roster returned home Christmas Eve, plugged in her Christmas tree and the lights. The tree lit up; the lights did not.     About a half hour later, she heard a knock at the door of her house at 1305 3rd Avenue in Vinton. Her house was on fire.     Joanne said she believes the fire was electrical in nature.

Holiday Extravaganza with Cooling Dancers

 The Cooling Dancers performed their Holiday Extragavanza last Sunday, Dec. 18.   Preschool and kindergarten children danced to songs about Santa, his elves, dolls, and more. Elementary children and older performed tap, jazz, and ballet routines. This year's program also included a “Nutcracker Miniature” section with ballerinas and mice, dancing kick-lines, a visit to the Polar Express, and a trip back to the “Charlie Brown” Christmas.

Tree of Lights Donor list

On behalf of the VGH Healthcare Foundation, thank you for your participation in the Tree of Lights fundraising efforts this year. It was amazing and very gratifying to see everyone get behind this effort – it was truly a community effort. We’ve set the bar very high for years to come, raising well over $85,000.00 this year for digital mammography.
