As news organizations approach the end of the year, they look back on the big stories of the last 365 days.

For the residents of the Vinton, Garrison, Urbana and Dysart areas, there is not much doubt or disagreement about the biggest story of 2011: The July 11 storm. While there were no serious injuries, the 130+ mph winds caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and destroyed thousands of trees. Many area residents are still repairing damaged caused by the storm.

RM December 30, 2011, 1:18 am yes it was a windstorm, but the real name for it is Derecho. I wish that that name would be used because those type of \"windstorms\" occour more frequently (with vaying intensity) in the midwest than one may realize... Im not griping,Im just wishing people to be more educated on what exactly the science was behind what happened during the pre-dawn hours of July 11 2011
