VSMS students participate in Lego League

The Cabbage Patch Kids and their robot in action. Here are some photos of the sixth grade Beast from the East and the seventh grade Cabbage Patch Kids Lego League teams during their recent competition. The competition this year combined the computer and design challenges of robot building along with lessons on health and food safety.

Lutheran Home Communities Giving Tree a Success

  Thank you for making the Lutheran Home Communities Giving Tree a huge success! The Lutheran Home Communities sponsors a Giving Tree each year for Benton County elderly shut-ins. Over 80 gifts were purchased for those who are in need! Participants selected a tag off of the tree with a gift suggestion, most of which are under $20.00.

Fund-raising efforts bring mammography unit to VGH; service starts Jan. 18

Monica Stark, Maria Davis and Sarah Kindschi pose with the new mammography unit at VGH. For well over a year, Vinton area residents, high school sports teams, breast cancer survivors and most recently, Tree of Lights donors, have helped provide the funding needed to bring Virginia Gay Hospital its own mammography service. "We exceeded our goal," said Imaging Services Director Monica Stark. The fund-raising covers the the cost of training the VGH technologists to operate the unit, as well as preparing the new mammography room in the Imaging Services Department.

6th Grade Science Students make travel brochures and need your vote!

Secret Sisters become Secret Santas

VS girls basketball players forego a bit of fun for themselves and give gifts to Lutheran Home resid Each year, the Girls Basketball Team exchanges gifts in a Secret Sister goodie bag to each other for the away games. But in the spirit of this season, this year they changed this tradition and used the money to purchase gifts for the Lutheran Home residents. All 21 players, managers and coaches participated.   Pictured is the team with their gifts that were delivered to the Vinton Lutheran Home on Friday December 16, 2011 before their home game against Waterloo Columbus.

Vikes of the week - Whitney Bohnsack & Kody Corum

  Whitney Bohnsack- Whitney was nominated by Mrs. Mulvaney.  She takes a lot of notes in French and shares the notes with a struggling student.  She is a hard worker and a good classmate to others.   Kody Corum-  He used extra time and after school to help put up many christmas decorations. He was nominated be Mr.

Drugged driving vs. drunk driving

  We are all aware of the painful consequences of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Anti-drinking and driving campaigns have been seen across our cities and nationally been recognized as huge problem that has affected families all across our nation. We have had a surge in the number of campaigns against using cellular devices while driving, because of the dramatic loss of life we have seen over the past few years.

Families begin receiving Angel Tree, Christmas gifts

A variety of quilts was also donated for the Christmas give-away. For the past several years, LaNette Parker and other volunteers have been collecting and arranging the distribution of Christmas gifts. In recent years, the Harvest Valley Ministry was the sponsoring agency; this year the Vinton Area Ministerial Association (VAMA) is working with Parker. The gift distribution also takes place at a new location: The ICAS building.

Tilford students visit Nature Center to learn, feed birds

Mrs. Mathis helps some girls with their pine cone bird feeders. Throughout this week, Tilford Elementary students will be spending time at the Benton County Nature Center near Rodgers Park. On Monday, the kindergarten and first grade students made pine cone bird feeders, then hung them on the trees around the Nature Center before spending a little time on climbing on the fallen trees. 

Middle School choirs share holiday music

The 8th grade chorus sings 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.' The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School choirs sang a variety of holiday songs during their concert Thursday at the VSHS auditorium. The 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade choirs all performed several songs.
