Snow wars!

Gracie Whelan looks through the spy tube of the snow fort Monday. The Whelan children -- Courtney, Brady and even young Gracie -- took on their parents in a snow ball fight using the fort they built in the yard of their Second Avenue home, with their father's help, on Monday, when the students had a scheduled day off from school.

VGH celebrates opening of new Mammography service

Cancer survivors and VGH technologist join Administrator Mike Riege for the mammography opening. Virginia Gay Hospital Imaging Services Department technologists joined three breast cancer survivors and hospital administrator Mike Riege in a short ribbon cutting celebration for the new mammography unit on Monday. Beginning tomorrow, the Imaging Services Dept. will offer mammograms on each Tuesday and Thursday. Community donations helped fund the remodeling project of the new room.

VSHS Jazz Band begins season with Division 1 rating

Caleb Bendull plays the large bass.      The competition season for the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Jazz Band began on Saturday, with the State event at Union High School.       VSHS performed at 2:30 p.m. at the State Jazz Band competition and received a division I rating.  This was their first performance of the year. The band performed 3 pieces; “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” Arranged by Dave Mills,  “The Nearness of You” Arranged by MIke Taylor featuring sax soloist Nick Gardner, and “Chameleon” Arranged by Chris Sharp.

Pink night unites VS basketball players with cancer survivors again

Several breast cancer survivors were recognized before the girls basketball game Friday. Pink socks, a variety of pink (and black and pink) shirts, and even a pink basketball were part of the annual Pink Night for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes basketball team Friday evening. Coach Deb Hannemen and her players organized a Pink Night event this year to raise funds for the local fight against breast cancer, as well as to show their support for local survivors and to share information about the disease.

Vinton veteran John Gualtier among 'Nine Who Care' honorees

John Gualtier of Vinton (shown in the 2011 PIP Parade) is one of the 'Nine Who Care' of 2012. A Vinton veteran who has spent thousands of hours helping other veterans with their health care needs, and has shared his experiences with many high school students, will be honored at the upcoming KCRG-TV "Nine Who Care" event. John Gualtier, who was the 2010 Art McLaughlin Legionaire of the Year for the State of Iowa, has logged approximately 7,000 hours of service to veterans at the VA hospital since 1995.

Weather delayed start of VS school day

  There is a two hour late start this morning, due to the snow, for Vinton-Shellsburg schools. There will NOT be an early out this afternoon for professional development.

Retired sheriff recalls 1967 triple murder that began in Benton County

   Decades before he made history as one of the longest-serving county sheriffs in Iowa, Ken Popenhagen's photo was in newspapers all over the U.S.     The retired Benton County sheriff, who now lives in the Atkins area, shared some memories with Vinton Today during our discussion with him about the cold cases of Benton County.

Stark, Bendull to officially join Vinton City Council tonight

      The Vinton City Council will welcome two new members tonight, as Tami Stark and Chris Bendull are sworn in. Stark will replace Don Burkey in the at-large seat; Bendull will take the place of Lisa Vermedahl.       The council will also act on resolutions concerning the sale of the former Vinton Popcorn facility and a proposed street rehabilitation project for the 900 block of Second Avenue.

Snow!

  Shovels and plows, boots and gloves -- along with the more recreational seasonal items such as sleds and snowmobilles -- now have their traditional white winter companion. A couple of inches of wind-blown snow covers the ground in Vinton this morning, and weather forecasters say residents can expect a few more inches throughout the day.

Police Dept. issues snowstorm parking reminder

  With the forecast of up to 4-5 inches of snow expected in the next 24-36 hours, it's that time of winter when Vinton Police are seeking everyone's assistance in getting their vehicles and trailers off all public right-of-ways and public parking lots, and to keep them off the streets until the snowfall has stopped and Street Department plows have been through your area.
