Virginia Gay Hospital Imaging Services Department technologists joined three breast cancer survivors and hospital administrator Mike Riege in a short ribbon cutting celebration for the new mammography unit on Monday. Beginning tomorrow, the Imaging Services Dept. will offer mammograms on each Tuesday and Thursday.
Community donations helped fund the remodeling project of the new room. For over a year, cancer survivors and Vinton-Shellsburg sports teams and countless "Tree of Lights" donors have helped provide the funding needed to start the project.
"This seems like is has had a lot of community support," said Janet Woodhouse, one of the cancer survivors who participated in the celebration.
Riege said the 2011 Tree of Lights campaign was the most successful ever, because of the commitment of area residents to support the new mammography unit.
Survivors Angie Tharp and Lisa Staab joined Woodhouse, along with technologists Monica Stark, Maria Davis and Sarah Kindschi for the ribbon cutting.
