The competition season for the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Jazz Band began on Saturday, with the State event at Union High School.

VSHS performed at 2:30 p.m. at the State Jazz Band competition and received a division I rating. This was their first performance of the year.

The band performed 3 pieces; “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” Arranged by Dave Mills, “The Nearness of You” Arranged by MIke Taylor featuring sax soloist Nick Gardner, and “Chameleon” Arranged by Chris Sharp.

"The jazz band students performed brilliantly Saturday at State Jazz Festival, and handled some last minute changes leading up to our performance in a very mature manner.," said VSHS Band Director Karl Smith. "I'm very proud of them. Thank you also to all of our supportive parents and community members that attended the event, and helped cheer on our students! It is nice to have so many in attendance supporting our kids."
