Missing Sheepdog

Missing- north of Vinton and Mt. Auburn, east of LaPorte City, on the south side of Cedar River.  Last seen last night running north toward Cedar River just north of Mt. Auburn.  She is an adult, female, old english sheepdog, approx, 70 lbs, spayed, pink and black zebra striped collar and leash. She has been injured by running through a barb-wire fence and is bleeding in the chest area.

Park areas Closed for Memorial Day Due to Flooding

These are the following areas that are currently closed due to rising floods on the cedar river. 1.       Wildcat Bluff Park, boat ramp 2.       Benton City Park, boat ramp & bottom tent campground at Benton City Park. 3.       Milroy’s Access 4.

Vinton Farmers Market kicks off season on June 6th

The Schmidt Family Band will be performing the first night of Farmers Market on June 6th   The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department will be kicking off another Farmers market season on Thursday, June 6th.  The market will once again be at the Vinton Rail Road Depot from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. every Thursday through September 26th. On June 6th patrons will be treated to the great sounds of the Schmidt Family Band.

Vikes of the Week: Several VSHS students honored

  Vike of the Week May 3rd Andrea Evans (Mrs. Woodhouse)-  It was a rainy morning and Andrea helped bring my stuff into the school. Vikes of the Week May 10 2013 (Mr. Zuspann)-  Bethany Stainbrook helped out AJ Kearns when we hurt his back.  (Mr Zuspann)-  Austin Snyder volunteered to help run the tape reel last night during the track meet.

PH fund-raising continues; area youth share lemonade stand profits

These children have been selling lemonade to raise funds to fight PH. After Pray PHor a Cure event raised more than $12,000 and helped make area residents aware of the impact of PH (pulminary hypertension), efforts to help fight the disease continue. Several area children have been splitting the profits from their lemonade stand with the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. The children have their stand set up along 13th Street, near 2nd Avenue.

First Wine Walk a success; nearly 120 participated

Scores of wine flavors were available for the nearly 120 Wine Walk participants. Vinton’s first Wine Walk was a great success!  We had 108 people register ahead of time and another 10 or so show up on Saturday to participate at the door.  It was a great first year for the event and we look forward revamping it next year in order to include more businesses and highlight more of what Vinton as to offer.

50 years as firefighter: Garrison FD, IFA honor Paul Schellhase

Al Esch, IFA 1st VP; Paul Schellhase; Jack Runge, IFA past president & Garrison Chief Steve Meyer. Garrison Firefighter Paul Schellhase was honored the evening of May 13 for 50 years of service to the department.  Schellhase joined the department in May of 1963 and is still an active member.  He has served as First and Second Captain and Secretary/Treasurer of the department and currently serves as Safety Officer.  He served as President of the Iowa Firefighters Association (IFA) in 1990-1991.

VS FFA members place in District Floriculture event

4th Place Team: Jessica Alderson, Sydney Walker, Katie Isbell   On Tuesday May 14, 2013, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had nine girls go to Hawkeye Community College to participate in District Floriculture. At Hawkeye, the girls were scored in the following areas: General Knowledge, Plant Identification, Floral Design, Floriculture Production, Pesticide Use and Application, and Problem Solving.

VS FFA members participate in District Ag Mechanics event

  On Thursday May 2, 2013, six Vinton Shellsburg FFA members participated in District Ag Mechanics at NICC  in Calmar. These members worked on electrical configurations, had to problem solve a mechanical error message, take a general knowledge exam, and work on parts of a combine. Cole Emrich, Kyle Henkle and Bastian Primmer placed 7th as a team out of about seventeen teams competing.
