Tilford 4th grade celebrates State Fair Day

Children learned how hard it is to pull someone from a grain bin during State Fair Day at Tilford. The Tilford 4th grade students ended their study of the 50 states by celebrating their annual Iowa State Fair Day. Each student chose one of the 50 states to study and feature in a display. Then on Friday, the students attended a miniature Iowa State Fair. The event included ice cream, games, livestock displays and other events. Naturalist Karen Phelps brought her collection of animal hides.

Zimmer bike to be part of 'Riding Through History' exhibit in DM

The bike Van Zimmer of Vinton rode in RAGBRAI 40 years ago will be on display starting in July. On May 9, 1972, Judge Van & Julie Zimmer of Vinton used their wedding gift money to purchase brand new bicycles. In 1974, Judge Zimmer rode his Schwinn Super Sport on SAGBRAI (AKA RAGBRAI II). Almost exactly 41 years after purchasing his bicycle, he donated it to the State Historical Museum at the State Historical Building of Iowa.

Wine Walk Registration Deadline Extended

  Early Registration Deadline Extended!   We've had great response to the Wine Walk and we don't want to leave anyone out, so we're extending the Early Registration Price through Sunday! If you haven't had a chance to sign-up for the wine walk yet, do so by the end of the day Sunday and you can still get the early registration price of just $20.

Benton County Sheriff's Report and arrest log, April 2013

  Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 250 calls for service and investigated 21 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 201 civil papers and issued 44 traffic citations and 100 traffic warnings. There were 18 arrests/juvenile referrals with 22 charges being filed in April 2013. (4) were simple misdemeanors, (13) were indictable misdemeanors, and (5) were felony charges.

Mrs. Steffen, 'John Scriven Committee' earn regional education honors

Kelly Steffen is the 2013 VSEA Teacher of the Year; Mindy McClintock presented the honor Wednesday. Two of the top 2013 awards from the education organization that serves Vinton-Shellsburg and 30 other area school districts were presented to V-S teachers this week. During the annual Vinton-Shellsburg Education Association award reception on Wednesday, Kelly Steffen received the Regional Teacher of the Year Award. And a group of teachers who together became known as the John Committee, received the Friend of Education Team Award.

4th grader Emma Dickinson wins FSB Poster Contest

Emma DIckinson receives a $100 check from Sue Hammond; Emma won the   Emma Dickinson, 4th grader in Becky Sturtz’s class at Tilford Elementary School created the winning poster for the local “Money Smart Week” poster contest at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust. She won $100 to open a new savings account. Emma and 45 other Tilford and Shellsburg Elementary students submitted posters for “Money Smart Week” which is a contest sponsored by the Community Bankers of Iowa – CBI.

Meaghan's story: PH victim's father visits Vinton fund-raiser

Meaghan Hicks, shown with father Carl, died at age 27 after battling PH more than half her life. As a military officer who led combat troops in many places around the globe, Carl Hicks considered himself a tough guy who could protect his soldiers and his family from anything. And then PH -- pulmonary hypertension -- entered his life. "When my daughter Meaghan was born, I held her and promised to protect her from everything," Hicks said Saturday in an interview with Vinton Today during the Pray PHor a Cure fund-raiser in Vinton.

Waterloo train tour to make stop in Vinton, June 8

A train ride from Waterloo to Vinton is the first of what Vinton Unlimited Director Nathan Hesson hopes to be a series of efforts between the Waterloo and Vinton communities. The Saturday, June 8, ride costs $59 per ticket, which includes a round trip ride from the Iowa Northern Railroad yard in Waterloo to Vinton. There will also be a tour of the Iowa Northern Railroad facilities in Waterloo.

Cedar Rapids man killed in Benton County motorcycle accident

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a motorcycle accident ½ mile south of Luzerne on 77th Street Drive Benton County that killed a 71 year old Cedar Rapids man. The accident happened around 12:45 this afternoon. The driver was riding with two other motorcyclists when two of the bikes failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway going into a steep ditch.
