FEMA Corps members graduate; receive praise for shaping program for future

FEMA Corps graduates recite the AmeriCorps pledge one last time. The first FEMA Corps members graduated from the program Thursday in Vinton, celebrating the completion of a challenging mission: Helping to create a new program while simultaneously helping others via the program that was a work in progress. FEMA Corps is the newest addition to the constantly growing AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) campus in Vinton, which began in the summer of 2008.

Eagle Scout project will improve Vinton Animal Shelter area

Matt Lash helps carry pieces of concrete to an end-loader. Matt Lash of Vinton, along with his dad, Jay, and several members of Boy Scout Troop 47, spent Saturday removing a concrete slab from the Vinton Animal Shelter property. Matt has been in Scouts for many years and is working on his Eagle Scout badge, the highest available in the Boy Scouts USA organization. His Eagle Scout project is replacing that slab wth some benches and landscaping, as well as replacing the entrance to the shelter.

End of an era: 4th Street Cleaners closes

End of an Era: George and Marta Bauer are closing 4th Street Cleaners. Business has been good at 4th Street Cleaners, said George Bauer. But times, across the nation, have been tough for the industry, especially in small towns. George and Marta have now joined the thousands of other American small-town dry cleaner owners who have decided to close the cleaning business. The Bauers have turned off their machines and sold the building to Rich Hainstock.

Area resident, State Senator say bridges may help prevent future flooding

2012 VS graduate dies in Tuesday accident on Highway 30

Jacob Novak, 18, of Shellsburg, died Tuesday evening in a two-car accident on Highway 30 south of Atkins. Authorities from the Benton County Sheriff's Office are investigating the accident at the intersection of Highway 30 and 32nd Avenue, which took place at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.  Authorities said the Novak was driving a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am south on 32nd Ave when his vehicle was hit on the driver side by a west-bound 2006 Volkswagen.

State school funding decision allows VS board to reduce tax levy

The Vinton-Shellsburg school board met for a special board meeting this morning at 7:00 AM.  The only item on the agenda was to discuss and take action on the implications of the legislature’s decisions on school funding.  When the board originally set the levy rates in the spring, the legislature had not set their level of funding support for the 2013-14 year.

City brush dump has reopened

With the water receding back into the Cedar River channel, the City of Vinton Brush Dump has now reopened. Please take yard waste and tree limbs to the normal dump site, the third right-hand turn going north on Highway 150 after the Cedar River bridge.
