Jacob Novak, 18, of Shellsburg, died Tuesday evening in a two-car accident on Highway 30 south of Atkins.
Authorities from the Benton County Sheriff's Office are investigating the accident at the intersection of Highway 30 and 32nd Avenue, which took place at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said the Novak was driving a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am south on 32nd Ave when his vehicle was hit on the driver side by a west-bound 2006 Volkswagen.
The Pontiac Grand Am was driven by Novak. The passengers in the vehicle were Samantha Ary, 20, of Garrison; Kyle Kirchner, 22, of Vinton; and a 1-year old child. Novak was transported to a Cedar Rapids hospital, where he died a short time later. The passengers were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The VW was driven by Dylan Strong, 27, of Fairfax. The passenger in the vehicle was Brenda Skalsky, 23, of Walford. Both subjects were transported to a Cedar Rapids area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Novak was a 2012 graduate of Vinton-Shellsburg High School.
The accident remains under investigation. The Atkins First Responders, Atkins Fire Department Blairstown Ambulance, Area Ambulance, along with the Benton County Sheriff's Office, responded.
