Phony law enforcement scammers targeting Benton County residents

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received several reports of attempted telephone scams in Benton County. While the attempts to scam and defraud the public are continuous and expanding on a daily basis, Benton County has been targeted once again in the last few days. Calls are being received from the District of Columbia, Washington D.

VU making progress on director search; still accepting applications

Anyone interested in applying for the position of Vinton Unlimited Director should immediately contact Jon Clingman to submit and application and resume, Clingman said today. The VU Board President said he is confident that the organization will find a good replacement for Nathan Hesson. In addition to locally advertising the position on Vinton Today and other media, VU posted the job on some employment web sites.

Another great year for Boomfest

The unique sounds of a steel drum band were part of Boomfest, 2014. Boom-Fest was a great time and wonderful community support!  We had over 60 vendors join us on Saturday and hundreds of people came out to get great deals on homemade arts & crafts.  Our entertainment was incredible this year and we thank Cedar Valley Bank & Trust, Farmers Savings Bank & Trust, and US Bank for their generous support of this great event!  Their generosity allowed us to bring fun, family-friendly entertainment to the community.

School lunch price settlement announced; refunds offered

Most Iowa school districts, including Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community and Union, are included in a recently-announced class action settlement involving school lunch prices. Families with children who attended schools and ate lunch via the school lunch program are entitled to a $3.50 per year per child refund, with a maximum of $50 per child.

Youth Garden now offers library; party set for Sept. 29

The new 'take-a-book, leave-a-book' library is now available at the Community Youth Garden. The Community Youth Garden, says Martha Neuzil, is one of the best-kept secrets in the area. Now, the garden has one more attraction for local residents – a free “take-a-book, leave-a-book” library. A new birdhouse now rests among the flowers and vegetables, where anyone of any age is invited to come to borrow a book, or donate one.

Jordan Yesak, Abigail Blackert win Bring the Noise 5K

Megan Hill to join VS as FFA assistant

Megan Hill will serve as the FFA assistant at VSHS. Starting on September 1, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter will be gaining a new addition to the team! Ms. Megan Hill, becoming more involved with the agriculture side of life than she probably expected, will be the chapter’s new FFA Assistant! Ms. Hill, being a new member of the community, applied for the position because of her passion for leadership building and group dynamics.

Music returns to Garrison Mercantile Hall with Sept. 13 Idiot Jam

The Idiot Jam will take place in the Farmers Mercantile Hall in Garrison, Sept. 13. A century ago, Garrison residents would gather on Saturday nights at the Farmers Mercantile Hall at 100 West Main Street to see friends, hear music and shop. Although it's been decades since the sounds of guitars or fiddles echoed from the balcony of the historical building, area residents can now go back -- at least for one evening -- to hear their neighbors play and sing their favorite songs.

Granddaughter of Vinton residents feels at home among chimpanzees of West Africa

Erin Wessling, granddaughter of Ralph and Marge, with a chimp named Mike in Senegal. In Western Africa, where a savanna woodland scattered with trees divides the Sahara Desert to the north from the fertile but shrinking rain forests located to the east and south of Senegal, a primitive hut is awaiting the Iowa woman who can't wait to see it again – along with her friends and the chimpanzees they have made a career of studying.

VS logos, flash drives to help fund Post-Prom activities

The Post Prom Committee will be painting the Vinton-Shellsburg logo on driveways for $40 for the first one and $30 for an additional logo.  Simply send your address and phone number to nasagan_6@msn.com You will then be contacted to set up a day and time to have the logo applied. You must be present when the logo is painted. Logo size is 3' by 3'.
