Biercrest Farms of Van Horne wins Ribbons in Iowa State Fair Holstein Show

Top dairies competed for honors in the Holstein Dairy Cattle show judged Friday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Scott Coons of Monticello claimed the Grand Champion Female banner. Volker-Hovden Holsteins of Maynard was awarded the Reserve Grand Champion Female and Premier Exhibitor titles. Moondale Farm of Monona was named Premier Exhibitor.

Guernseys of Sandridge Farm of Vinton place at Iowa State Fair Comeptition

Top dairies competed for honors in the Guernsey Dairy Cattle show judged Friday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. South Lane Farm of Epworth secured the Grand Champion Female title and collected second place in both the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests. Prairie Moon Guernseys of Waukon showed the Reserve Grand Champion Female and also won first place in the Premier Breeder contest.

New teachers, associates join VS staff

New HS staff: Ken Kasper, Patricia Green, Shelly Mesch, Carrie Weber, Marnie Barnett, Angie Ungs. While classes for VS students begin next week, teachers began attending sessions this week to prepare for the upcoming school year. Part of the training focusing on welcoming new teachers to the district.    The new staff members include:   V-S High School: Ken Kasper, Asst. Principal; Angie Ungs, Spanish; Patricia Green, Math & Physics; Carrie Weber, Science; Marnie Barnett, Art; Daniel Beltz, Special Education Assoc.

Beat Wisconsin: Area fireworks builders seek Iowa team trophy at PGI Convention

'Fire!' Scott Anderson and his crew won first place at PGI with this choreographed display. "Beat Wisconsin." That phrase, normally heard in Iowa City in the fall, has been heard at the north end of Iowa's section of the Avenue of the Saints this week. Three hours north of Kinnick Stadium, at the North Iowa Events Center in Mason City, the fireworks builders from the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association have been trying for years to beat the builders from the Wisconsin Pyrotechnic Arts Guild.

Deb Nielson of Newhall wins Bee photography contest at State Fair

Deb Neilson of Newhall won two first-place honors in the photography section of the Iowa State Fair Apiary event. All exhibitor entries were products of the exhibitor's apiary unless otherwise specified. Entries will be on display throughout the Fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the John Deere Agriculture Building sponsored by Alliant Energy.

Boom-fest to feature artists

By Ben Hyland   Throughout the month, Vinton Today will be highlighting the artists, craftsmen, and vendors that will be featured at Boom-fest on August 30th.  Laura Johnson is one of Boom-fest’s featured artists, and specializes in creating fine art wall portraits for her clients.     She says that what makes her unique is the attention to detail that goes into each and every piece of art she creates.

Local fireworks makers competing for international honors

Scott Anderson of Brandon made this shell for the PGI convention. Chuck Yedlik, Scott Anderson and other local members of the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association are competing this week in the annual Pyrotechnics Guild International (PGI) Convention, held this year in Mason City.  Beginning Sunday evening, fireworks builders displayed for a panel of judges the fireworks they made. The winners will receive their trophies during the event banquet this Friday.

5th Annual VSU Special Olympics Benefit Ride, auction set for Saturday

This painting by Paul Roster is among auction items for the Aug. 16 Special Olympics Benefit Ride. After nearly a year in the planning, the annual benefit ride for your local Special Olympics team is only a few days away. “With this being our fifth year, we wanted to do it up big!” said event coordinator Kris Kramer.  The ride will be approximately 130 miles long, starting at the Ron Da Voo with registration at 10 a.m. on Saturday with stops in Traer, Keystone, Walford, Shellsburg, Urbana and two stops in Vinton.
