Norway man dies in racing accident at Hawkeye Downs
A Norway man known for his love of Norway baseball and the Chicago Cubs, his willingness to share unique posts on Facebook and involvement in conservative political causes died in a “Race 'em or Wreck 'em” event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on the evening Saturday, Sept. 13.
John "JP" Pickart, 68, was racing in an RV when another driver collided with him during Saturday's school bus-RV race sanctioned by B & B Promotions, which rented the track for the event. VCC team wins Ryder Cup at Wildcat
The Vinton Country Club won the annual Men’s Cedar Valley Ryder Cup on Sunday August 24th at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg. The Vinton team was led by Shane Scott and Chad Demaria who finished 5 under par for 27 holes of Ryder Cup format, best shot, best ball and alternate shot. Right behind them were Vinton members Rick Murphy and Matt Martin who shot 4 under par.
Iowa Ag Secretary to visit area farm businesses Sept. 24
Benton Development Group will welcome Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, in the county on September 24th, 2014. Northey, who is a fourth generation farmer from Spirit Lake, is serving his second term as Secretary of Agriculture after being reelected in 2010.
His priorities as Secretary of Agriculture include advancing science and new technologies to better care for our air, soil and water and reaching out to Iowans to tell the story of Iowa agriculture.
Vandals damage Civil War soldier's tombstone, others at Evergreen Cemetery
Destiny Lanham sat crossed legged in front of a flat grave marker on Sunday afternoon, wiping tears from her eyes as she remembered her grandmother, Sharon Rouse, who died six years ago this week.
"She was my best friend," said Lanham.
One of the countless visitors to the more than 12,000 graves dating back to the mid-1800s at Evergreen, Lanham was shocked and angered to learn that 100 yards away, other people a few hours earlier had come to vandalize the cemetery. The empty bags will be delivered to your door this week and they ask you to fill them with can goods and place them outside your front door on Saturday morning Sept. 20, 2014 by 9 am when they will be around to collect them to take to the local food bank. Patriotism and community: V-S students wear other colors for 2 nights
Although black gold are the favorite colors of Vinton-Shellsburg athletes and fans, on two nights this week, the students and athletes wore some different colors as they showed their love of their country and their support for another school dealing with an unthinkable tragedy.

A year and a month after three people died in a drunk driving accident on Highway 30 near Keystone, a Texas man who had been working in Iowa has pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide.
