Union High School’s “Bright Star” production wins 7 Statewide awards

Union High School’s spring musical production of “Bright Star” recently was informed by the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards that they are the recipients of 7 awards for this year’s production. Union has participated in this educational program for the past 6 years.The production was awarded 2 major group awards. First “Outstanding Musical Production” was awarded to Union as the highest honor the cast can achieve.

Kyle Reeve named Tilford Elementary School’s New Principal

Welcome Kyle, Jill, Elijah and Lincoln Reeve, Kyle will join Tilford Elementary this fall The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District has chosen a new principal for Tilford Elementary School in Vinton. Kyle Reeve was a teacher in the Tipton Community School district for ten years before serving for the past two years as principal at Roundy Elementary in Columbus Junction. Reeve was among a field of 29 applicants for the Tilford Elementary position and among nine who participated in telephone interviews.

Fire at McNeal Residence takes outbuilding but spares house

A fire  early Monday morning around 1:00 a.m. found the Vinton Fire Department responding to a structure fire with 19 members responding. With the last fireman leaving around 4:30 a.m. the men returned home.The fire took out a building at the Darrell McNeal residence located at 102 G Ave. in the Southwest section of Vinton. The fire was limited to the outside building and melted the siding on the house, but the Vinton Fire Department was able to spare the house.

Blessing Boxes of Vinton helps area residents

2 Blessing Boxes located in Vinton 1 on the former East School block and 1 across from the Ray House Blessing Boxes of Vinton, Iowa started because two local women LOVE Jesus so much they decided to serve the community. Accident leaves one utility pole down and car in the river

A bit of entertainment, education and embarrassment on Friday morning as car is retrieved On 04/23/2020, the Vinton Police Department responded to a report of a utility pole that appeared to have been struck down by a vehicle along River Side Drive just east of Fischer Pavilion.  Tire tracks appeared to have left the roadway and into the Cedar River leaving vehicle debris along the way indicating that the vehicle was underwater in the Cedar River as there was nothing visible on the surface of the river.

Lillie and Carli hit the ground running in New Jersey

The good news is that I got to spend about 30 minutes today video conferencing with Vinton-Shellsburg High School seniors Lillie Lamont and Carli Lang about their first week working with Covid-19 patients in a New Jersey care facility. The bad news is that I apparently messed up the actual recording of the meeting, so instead of you actually getting to see them this time, I'll have to tell you about it.

Tree planted in memory of Caroline Frazier at Tilford Elementary

The plaque that will be placed near the tree. John Frazier stood in the rain, alongside a Princeton Golden Maple tree that was about to stand in honor of two mothers on Earth Day. The first, Mother Earth, because it was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and the other was his wife Carolyn who passed away last year after a battle with cancer. He made a few remarks before planting a tree to honor his wife.

Wendling Quarry makes the earth move under our feet

On Wednesday morning around 11:30 a.m. Wending Quarry opened the Vinton Quarry located on 24th Ave. Dr. just north of the airport. Residents said that their house shook and some ran outside thinking someone had run into their homes.Dave Clark who is in charge of the blasting said that they are done blasting and that crews will begin working in the area creating rock for the country roads.

Lisa Murray receives 2020 Building Bridges Outstanding Educator Award

 Congratulations to Lisa Murray for being named a Building Bridges Outstanding Educator Award through the Grant Wood Area Education Agency (GWAEA)! Lisa is one of four educators from across the GWAEA area recognized for demonstrating exceptional knowledge and use of assistive technology with students in the classroom. Lisa is a Special Education Teacher at Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District's Tilford Elementary School.
