Mt. Auburn fire results in loss of house and other property damage

On 05-04-2020, at about 07:45 AM, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a structure fire at 201 East St, Mt Auburn IA, in Benton County.  There were no injuries, no one was present at the time of the first responder’s arrival.  The home is believed to be a complete loss.

Brennen Still celebrates 13th birthday with Parade

Everyone and yes, even the dog came out to celebrate Brennen Still's 13th Birthday on Monday night Brennen Still celebrated his 13th birthday on Monday with a parade in his honor filled with people from across the area. The Vinton Police Department lead the procession past the Still home. Several friends, family, teachers, elected officials all wishing Brennen a happy birthday were present. Also arriving to entertain was Tom Pingenot who created a bit of fun with the gigantic bubbles that he created while the parade passed by.

Vinton Community Foundation makes donation toward new Splash Pad

Boomtown won't be held this year, mark it on the calendar for next year The Vinton Community Foundation’s Edwin and Melba Werning City Youth Fund made a donation on Wednesday to the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department for the new splash pad that will soon begin construction.At the presentation were Vinton Community Foundation Directors from left to right, Robin Martin representing Vinton Unlimited and Nathan Hesson representing the Vinton City Council presenting VPRD director Matt Boggess with a check for $20,000.

COVID-19 Virus Takes the Boom Out of Boomtown

Boomtown now cancelled for 2020 On Friday, Boomtown annonced that the event will be cancelled this year because of COVID-19. The event is usually held in August, but will resume in 2021.Over the past 13 years, Boomtown has persevered through storms of rain, mud, high winds and flooding to bring you the best pyrotechnic show in the Midwest. However, due to circumstances with the current COVID-19 pandemic, it is with great regret that the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association has decided to cancel the 2020 Boomtown event.

Benton County Fair Projects Building will not open this year

Due to COVID-19 part of the fairgrounds will be closed during the Benton County Fair this year.There will be NO open classes (pantry, photography, garden, home Needle work/crafts, flowers), however, the building will be open next year.This is NOT the projects or 4-H building.

Trailer fire Wednesday Evening

The aftermath of a second fire in Vinton this week. On Wednesday evening, around 7:30 p.m. the Vinton Fire Department responded to a second fire report this week. The department was called to a trailer on fire in the Longview Terrace Mobile Home Park off of R Ave. in Vinton.There were no reported injuries.video cred to Robert Parker

Downtown Prom will be held for V-S Graduates in June

In a statement from the Vinton-Shellsburg School, the school announced plans for the graduates for a "Downtown Prom."
