PEO HG to meet April 27; members urged to 'introduce a friend'

Chapter HG will meet Monday April 27th at the US Bank Community Room at 6:30 pm. This will be a salad supper social with the 1st half furnishing salads. Cost for others will be $7.00 ea. It's an evening of girl talk and chocolate,  introduce a friend to P.E.O. The program will include the dynamic speakers, Jill Mortenson and Glenda Dixon,  both are Past Presidents of Iowa State Chapter.

PEO MZ to meet April 27

PEO Chapter MZ will meet Mon., April 27, at 1:30, at the home of Ann Jorgensen assisted by Frieda Davis.  Karen Schlue will present the program.  Meet as usual to carpool.

Microchip event set for Saturday

Friends of the Shelter will be hosting a microchip clinic TOMORROW, Saturday April 18 from 10am-12pm.   Each microchip will be registered on-site into the national 24PetWatch database.   Dogs: $25 Cats: $20   When you stop in, remember to bring your new and gently worn shoes and to pick up some raffle

Vietnam Veteran Recognition Day at the Capitol, May 7

Vietnam Veteran Recognition Day will be held Thursday May 7 at 11 a.m.at the Vietnam Memorial on the grounds of the Iowa Capitol. The name of one more Iowan, who died as a result of wounds from combat in Vietnam, was recently added to the Iowa and National Vietnam memorials. His service will be honored during a rededication of the Iowa Vietnam Memorial.

Poverty Simulation: Event design to help highlight day-to-day challenges

The public is invited to participate in a Poverty Simulation to be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, at V-S High School: The Poverty Simulation is a unique, interactive experience that helps people begin to understand what it might be like to live in an impoverished family, trying to survive from month to month.  The objective of the simulation is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income families.

Benefit concert for accident victims set for April 30 at Jimberly's in Newhall

A benefit concert for the families of the five victims of last week’s Highway 150 accident will take place April 30, at Jimberly’s in Newhall. Framing the Red, a Mississippi band with a member who grew up in Urbana, will play the concert beginning at around 7 p.m. Band member William Fish played in the Center Point-Urbana High School marching band while Triston Randall was on the football team.

Master Gardener Extravaganza set for Saturday; pre-registration available now

The Benton County Master Gardener Extravaganza is set for this Saturday, April 18, from 8 am to 3:00 pm at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center The public is welcome; you can pre-register. The cost is  $35 for those who register by Friday at the Benton County Extension. Walk-ins are limited.    The event begins with morning coffee from 8:00 to 8:30, and includes hot lunch and vendors for you to do some shopping (Mothers day is only 3 weeks away).

Friends of the Shelter needs your old shoes

UPDATE: We have officially reached 55% of our goal! What does this mean? Within the next three weeks, we still need to collect 1125 pairs of shoes!! Can you help us get there?!  We ask that everyone takes a few minutes and finds a pair (or twelve) of shoes they'd be willing to donate to Friends of the Shelter.

VSHS FFA Labor Auction set for Thursday

A total of 41 Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members have signed up to participate in this year's Labor Auction.  Local businesses, farmers and individuals will bid on the services of the members as the decades-old tradition continues. The auction is one of the main fund-raising activities of the chapter (along with winter fruit sales).  The event begins at 7 p.
