From the front row of the Balcony: 'Dream House' offers thoughtful story

       What's the difference between a psychopath and a writer?      It would be unkind of you to ask, "Is there a difference?" Natural, perhaps, but not unkind.      Palace patrons expected to see an inspiring true story on the big screen in Vinton. But a scheduling problem kept "Dolphin Tale" away; "Dream House" took its place.

CATS JUST SCRATCH THE SURFACE

Tension is mounting on the VSHS stage as the cast of CATS enters its final week of rehearsals. 25 kitties will enter the make-up room for the first time on Saturday morning, followed by rehearsal with the combined student and community band on Saturday afternoon, and an additional choreography rehearsal Saturday night. Greg and Diane Walston (parents of senior cat Matt, Old Deuteronomy) have graciously offered to provide dinner for the whole litter Saturday evening.

In the spirit of the season, the Palace brings you thrills and chills with “Dream House,” showing Friday, October 28 through Thursday, November 3 at 7 p.m. nightly, and Monday, October 31 at 2 p.m. Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Weisz star in this PG-13-rated suspense thriller about a successful New York writer (Craig) who discovers that the country is just as threatening and frightening as the big city.

Kirkwood Presents Inspirational Musical About Parents, Children and Faith

  Children of Eden combines the story of Adam and Eve with Noah’s Ark   Kirkwood Community College continues its fall performing art series with a production ofChildren of Eden. The musical is set for four performances, Nov. 3-6, in Ballantyne Auditorium. Show times Thursday, Friday and Saturday are at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee at 2:30 p.

From the Front Row of the Balcony: 'Moneyball' is true, and inspiring

      It’s hard not to be romantic about baseball.     So hard, in fact, that every baseball fan in Benton County should be in one place Tuesday evening: The Vinton Palace.     The Palace crew will have to forgive us if we didn’t show up yet; between the VS football season finale and the World Series, the only two showings of “Moneyball” that don’t conflict with those events were Monday’s matinee and Tuesday evening’s showing.

VSHS Drama department teams up with Cooling Dance Studio to bring CATS

Cooling Dancers join in preparation as mice and beetles in the production of  VSHS Drama department is excited to team with Cooling Dance Studio to present CATS on November 4 - 6. Several of Joan Cooling-Noeller's dance students will be participating in the Jennyanydots number, including K-2 graders as mice, and older students as beetles. Hello Dolly! coming to Benton Community

The musical "Hello, Dolly!" is coming to the Benton Community High School stage on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 3, 4, and 5 at 7:00 P.M. Performances will be at the high school auditorium in Van Horne. Make reservations by calling the high school office (319-228-8701, ext. 357). Ticket prices are $6.00 for adults, and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Brad Pitt and the business of baseball slide on to the big screen this week at the Palace. “Moneyball” opens Friday, October 21 and runs through Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. every evening, and Monday, October 24 at 2 p.m. “Moneyball” stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, a one-time baseball star who flamed out in the big leagues and now works as the general manager for the Oakland Athletics.

'Cats' prepare for show

VSHS CATS cast members create their own cat wigs, based on the Broadway design Community volunteer Teresa Strong (background) is helping VSHS CATS cast members create their own cat wigs, based on the Broadway design. Wigs are constructed of yarn, each piece individually separated and glued to a wig head before styling. Miranda Swallom (Gussie), Maddy Springer (Jennyanydots) and Emma Clingman (Grizabella) work on Grizabella's gray wig.

'CATS' getting ready to Me-Wow you!

CATS, by Andrew Lloyd Webber,  based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," is the  longest-running Broadway musical. Cast members are busy purr-fecting  their song and dance routines and learning to move and act like cats.
