VSU had a fantastic day in the pool at LinnMar Aquatic Center for their district swim meet. Swimming isn't divided into classes like other sports - so VSU was up against massive competition from Cedar Rapids Jefferson, LinnMar, Iowa City High, and Iowa City West with some smaller districts like Williamsburg, Tipton and Keokuk.

The Medley Relay of Clarissa Carolan, Lexi Goodell, Geordyn Webster and Justyce Dominick has proven a force to be reckoned with all season. Today was no exception: the relay dropped more than 4.5 seconds and came in ahead of 3 teams that were seeded faster than them going into the event. Placing 4th in the district in 2:57.04 ended up being good enough for 25th in the state, qualifying them for a trip to Marshalltown for the State Swimming Meet Nov 9.

Carolan, Goodell, Webster, and Dominick all dropped significant time in their individual events as well. Lauren Moore, Carlie Spore, Mara Spalding, Sadie Hennings, and Carleigh Wilson also posted season bests in their supporting contributions to the team total.

Almost all of our girls cut time in everything they swam - that's always a good way to finish the season! These girls have really put in the extra time to get good practices in lately, and today it really paid off. This season has been a good lesson in playing the hand you're dealt. It would have been easy for them to throw in the towel when the pool broke down back in September. But they stuck it out and really reaped the rewards. This team can close the season with a great deal of pride in their accomplishments.

There are over 1,300 girls who participated in high school swimming this season. Our medley relay placed 25th in the state last weekend, landing them in the top 100 swimmers. That's the top 8% of female swimmers in Iowa. Every school that placed ahead of VSU has a larger enrollment, most being 2 or 3 times larger. And every other school that even qualified has its own working pool. What this team has accomplished is truly impressive. Our swim program may be comparatively small and may lack state-of-the-art facilities, but they've shown they can still accomplish a lot. We are thankful for the support the school and the community have extended - we strive to make the best use of everything we have!

You can view the final results (2019 girls regionals...) and seed times (so you can see exactly how much time they cut from their seed time to their finals time).

The girls will swim around noon on Saturday, November 9 in Marshalltown.
