Junior Brooks Erickson threw for three TDs, ran for another and had a key interception to lead the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings to a 36-22 football victory over Tipton Friday night at the Karr Athletic Complex

Erickson threw his first TD on the first drive of the game on a short toss to senior Sam Griffith, and before the end first quarter he threw his second of the game, this time to CJ Rickels and the Vikes had a 13-0 lead.

It would stay until a wild flurry of action to close out the second half. With under a minute left, Luke Beyer drilled a 35-yard field goal to make it 16-0. Head coach Jim Womochil decided to throw the Tigers a curve as he called an onside kick. The V-S special teams executed to perfection, recovering the ball at midfield.

On the next play Erickson hit Rickels who made an incredible catch down the sideline to the Tipton 2. One play later Rickels made an incredible catch, tapping his toes as he dove and caught the ball for the touchdown, but it was costly. Rickels injured his shoulder on the play and did not return to the game.

Erickson ran for third quarter TD of his own and Jose Wilson added one in the fourth to give the Vikings a 36-8 lead. Tipton added two late TDs but the songbooks were already passed in by that point.

With the win, the Vikes open the year at 2-0, their best start since 2005. They will look to improve on that start next Friday night when they travel to Oelwein to take on the Huskies.
