It was a tough night on the court for the home team Thursday as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikette volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Benton Community in WaMac Conference action at the Garrison Fieldhouse.
The Bobcats took home a 17-25, 19-25 and 25-27 sweep to open the conference race 1-0 and drop Coach Michelle Stepanek’s Vikettes in the other direction at 0-1. The loss saw the Vikettes play each of the first two sets close before Benton pulled away for the wins. In the final set, the Vikettes actually lead 15-6 at one point before the Bobcats stormed back, finally winning a marathon.
Josie Sage had a solid night with six kills, 13 assists, 14 digs and a perfect 17 for 17 night from the serving line with an ace.

Vinton-Shellsburg will host the annual Vikette Invitational Saturday. The six-team tourney begins at 9 AM and includes Belle Plaine, Iowa Valley, Janesville, Nashua-Plainfield and West Delaware. Next Thursday the Vikettes will host a quadrangular with Dyersville Beckman, Oelwein and Solon, beginning at 5 PM.
