Coach Michelle Stepanek’s Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team grabbed a solid runner-up finish at Saturday’s Meskwaki Settlement tournament.

The Vikettes (5-2 overall) opened the day with a 13-21, 11-21 loss to fourth-rated North Tama, but bounced back from there. V-S stopped Belle Plaine 21-16, 17-21, 15-12, then swept Meskwaki 21-7, 21-1 to finish pool play at 2-1.

The Vikettes took out Denver 21-15, 16-21, 15-7 in the semifinals, but dropped a second bout to North Tama — coached by Garrison native and former Vikette standout Channing (Merchant) Halstead — 15-21, 17-21.

Junior Josie Sagen had a huge day with 21 kills, 38 assists and 24 digs. Sonnie Evans added 37 assists and 20 digs. Brynn Patterson led the Vikettes in kills with 26, while Raelynn Murray paced the back row with 30 digs.

The Vikettes will be home Thursday night to host Benton Community in conjunction with the Courage For Carly fund-raiser to help with the medical expenses for Tilford Elementary kindergarten teacher Carly Meyer. Ms. Meyer was recent diagnosed with leukemia.

The fund-raiser and JV/freshman volleyball action will start at 5 PM and continue throughout the evening, up through the start of the varsity match. Look for more on the fund-raiser in tomorrow's Vinton Today.
