Jose Wilson played a perfect overture and this teammates completed the symphony Friday night.

Wilson went 59 yards for a touchdown on game’s — and football season’s -- first play to pace the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings to a 23-14 victory over Alburnett. Luke Beyer added a 23-yard field goal late in the first quarter to make 10-0. Just before halftime, Max Griffith picked off an errant Pirate pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.

Alburnett closed the gap to 17-14 early in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Brooks Erickson’s one-yard plunge with eight minutes left put the Vikings by nine at 23-14. Griffith shut the door with another pick with 3:23 left and it was time to pass in the song books.

The Vikings (1-0) will prepare to defend the home field next Friday night when the take on the Tipton Tigers.
