After trailing for most of the first half, the Vinton-Shellsburg sophomores scored two third-quarter touchdowns, including a long pass from Tyler Bartz to Tanner Davis, to take a 32-26 lead over West Delaware. But the Hawks took the lead on a TD with 10 minutes left, and converted the two-point play for a 34-32 lead.
After the Vikings' final drive stalled with less than two minutes left, the Hawks ran out the clock, lining up in punt formation and running backwards until time expired.
The Viking varsity and freshmen travel to West Delaware Friday evening. The Hawks' soph coach is VS alum Matt Finn.
