Vinton-Shellsburg Vikette sophomores Lily Horst and Bristi Gerber led the way at the WAMAC Conference cross country meet, finishing first and second in the varsity girls race, as freshman Cassie Kenney finished fifth.
Juniors Jordan Evens (8th place) and Derek Dinderman led the Vikings in the boys varsity event.
The varsity boys were second in team scoring while the girls team finished in third place.
"It was a great night to run with a perfect setting and environment," says coach John Frazier. "With 16 teams from eastern Iowa, we knew it was going to be a tough meet. I thought we rose to the importance of the meet and we turned some heads to what Vinton-Shellsburg has been training for for the last few months. Everyone is important on our team and it showed when it came to the team points."
They coach noted that several JV runners challenged the varsity times and most ran season's bests. The runners compete at Regionals at Waverly next Thursday.
