Going into the 2013 season, Vinton-Shellsburg Coach Jim Womochil predicted that Decorah and West Delaware would be the two best teams in the conference.
Their records (Decorah, 7-0 and WD, 6-1), as well as the scoreboard the last two Friday nights are convincing evidence of that.
West Delaware built a 35-0 lead en route to a 56-22 victory in Vinton.
Joel Barnes scored the last two Viking touchdowns; senior Tanner Spies scored the first one on a 39-yard pass from QB Chase Overton.
The Vikes (2-5, and 1-4 in district play) travel to Williamsburg for a non-district game. They end the season at Crestwood, Oct. 25.
Two Vikings had first ball-carrying opportunities for the season. Punter Cole Garwood ran for a first down on a fake punt. And senior Wyatt Lyons returned his first kickoff. However, he was injured on the play and missed the rest of the game as he sat on the bench with his ankle wrapped in ice.
The sophomores also struggled, losing 36-0. Former VS graduate and teacher Matt Finn is the WD sophomore coach.
