Vikings blast South Tama, 57-31

VINTON -- The Vinton-Shellsburg boys' basketball team rode a red-hot start into 2021 Monday night and came away with a 57-31 WaMaC West win over South Tama.The Vikings (3-4 overall), pulled out to an 18-4 first quarter lead and were up 42-10 at the half. Derron Hughes drained four three-pointers on his way to a game high 15 points, while CJ Rickels joined him in double figures with 12.

Lamont, Sweson, Ortner win titles at Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA -- Three Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers won championships and two others medalled in a solid performance at Maquoketa's Zimmerman Invitational.Freshman 113-pounder Carter Lamont, 132-pounder Damon Swenson and 138-pounder Brady Ortner all picked up titles, while Bryce Radeke picked up a runner-up finish and 106-pounder Aldin Swanson was third.

During this pandemic, so many changes have made High School more stressful than normal. Lucky for the Winter sports, we can compete with requirements, masks, and distancing. The bowling team this year has 48 bowlers which means that there are several bowlers unable to compete in the scheduled meets. Some of these kids are new to bowling and have improved greatly.

The varsity teams competed on Friday against 2A and 3A tough competitive teams. First up for the girls' team, we had a record-breaking score for our school of 2809 and came in 2nd place. The team was led by senior Christina Harrelson with a 408 series and the team average 187 overall. After three meet cancellations, the VS/CPU Stormin’ Vikings started the season on a hot streak with both a dual and invitational win. Thursday night, after a long trip to Decorah to face some stiffer competition, the Stormin’ Vikes may no longer remain unbeaten, but have established themselves as a solid team with some exceptional swimmers.

Viking wrestlers split home twinbill with Regina and Marion

VINTON -- Coach Brian Sheston's Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling squads split a pair of dual meets Thursday night in the Garrison Fieldhouse.The Vikes stopped Iowa City Regina, 50-28 in their first bout, but dropped a hard-fought battle to Marion, 45-34 in the finale.Against Regina, Caleb Rouse (285) and Brady Ortner (138) recorded falls for the Vikings, while Carter Lamont (120) added a technical fall and Damon Swenson (wrestling up three weights at 145) pulled out a 6-2 decision.

The Vinton Shellsburg and CPU Stormin’ Vikings continued their strong start to the season on their second trip to Williamsburg. Having won a dual with the Raiders 90-76 on Thursday, the team followed up with a strong win at the Raider invitational featuring host Williamsburg, Oskaloosa, and Centerville.

VS Bowlers VS. Waverly-Shellrock

Both VS Bowling teams were victors in the match against Waverly Shellrock on Tuesday. These kids are working very hard and pushing themselves daily. I love to see how they interact and work together to hep those who need a hand. The teams were lead by junior Anna Becker With a 369 series and senior Ayden Bearbower with a 255 game and 447 series.

V-S Bowling takes on West Delaware

The VS Bowling Team competed against West Delaware on Friday and we were victorious across the board. The Varsity boys team had a slow start but quickly recovered to win by 98 pins. This team shot 2946 which is a 196 average. The team was lead by sophmore Alex Funk averaging 227 to lead the team to victory.
