SACG Golf Tournament and Fundraiser a Success

The SACG Golf Tournament and Fundraiser was a success! Thank you to all who supported the 8th Annual Shellsburg Area Community Groups Golf Tournament and Fundraiser on June 22. We are thankful to the many area businesses who purchased hole sponsorships and provided silent auction prizes. Thanks also to the golfers and those who purchased raffle tickets.

Alright, it's official. I loved the demolition derby. I remember vaguely going to the race track once with my dad when I was little, but I think it was only because he had helped to repair one of the cars for a race. I have to admit, I was thinking when it was about to start, "Why in the WORLD are the making the track wet? They canceled last night BECAUSE it was too wet!" Then I realized it was so that the demo-ing didn't actually kill anyone with the traction from a dry track.

(Photo by Kyle Ealy)  Lapped cars didn’t bother Joel Callahan.He figured if he had to get past them, so did everybody chasing him for the lead in Thursday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Benton County Speedway.

A quarter-century of memories will be shared and a tear or two shed before the final checkers fly for one of the longest running events in the history of the IMCA Modified division.The 25th and final Hogan Memorial is Wednesday, July 3 at Benton County Speedway in Vinton. With lap money and the mid-way leader’s bonus, the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier could pay the winner more than $5,000.

The Deery Brothers Summer Series headlines blue ribbon fair week entertainment next Thursday, June 27 at the Benton County Speedway. The 50-lap $2,000 to win event marks just the fourth visit by the IMCA Late Model tour to Vinton. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and the drivers’ meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Noah Lindauer is a Junior at Vinton Shellsburg High School who has learned that he has a passion for a mostly unknown boys sport in the State of Iowa, volleyball. There is no sanctioned high school boys volleyball through the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Noah’s dad, Tom, coached the Vinton/Shellsburg girls freshman volleyball team when Noah was a freshman in high school.

Lamont Named to All-District

The high school girls golf season is officially completed, but the All-District list was published only this past week. In addition to winning the WaMaC Conference, Individual Championship at the May 6th Super Meet at Gardner Golf Course in Marion this year, Vinton-Shellsburg's Lillie Lamont was named for this honor.

Independence and Vinton battle it out on the ballfield

The boy's baseball teams of Vinton-Shellsburg and Independence Community went head to head for two games tonight on the Vinton ball field. You know it's a tightly matched game with it's not over quickly! Both teams performed well, holding the other team off as best they could while Independence won with a score of 9-8.
