VPRD to host 9-Pin Adult Bowling Tournament

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is excited to once again be hosting our annual 9-Pin Adult Bowling Tournament at Berry’s Lanes this coming Saturday, February 13th. Not only is this tournament a ton of fun, but it also helps to raise some funding for capital improvements at our community parks. Bowling will begin at 2 PM and your $20 entry fee includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, flight prizes and a donation to the VPRD Park Improvement Capital Fund.

Below are the results for the bowling meet on Friday.  This was senior night as you all know and all teams were victorious.  We have 13 senior bowlers and a Senior manager that has been with me for all 3 seasons.  This was a difficult night for me as a coach because these kids have been so great to be around and have made my job so much fun.

Meet the Vikettes of the Class of '22: 6th grade girls play many sports together

Not long after finishing their league basketball season, the athletes in the Vinton AAU 6th grade volleyball league are preparing for their first tournament this weekend, with the goal of returning to the State AAU contest. For volleyball, Shelly Patterson and Shawna Kurth have been coaching the girls since the third grade. "Shelly is the head coach and I am her assistant," says Kurth.

Rivalry Week, Part 2: Vikings must get past Benton, CPU to win Wamac West

The second of three "Rivalry Week" series of the 2015-16 high school basketball season takes place over the next few days at the Garrison Fieldhouse, where the Vikings will host Benton Community on Friday and Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday. The Vikings lost at Benton on Jan. 12 and at CPU on Jan. 15. The three teams are contending for the Wamac West Title.

Vikings earn 6th at North Central Swim Meet

The VS boys swim team finished in 6th at the North Central Meet in Grinnell. The Viking swim team appears to be peaking at the right time.  On Saturday in Grinnell the young Viking squad turned in its best overall performance of the year in claiming sixth place at the North Central Swim Conference Meet in Grinnell. Hitting the pool for the first time since the season-ending injury to freshman standout Isaac Lindauer, the Vikings stepped up their performances across the line-up.

Garwood, Bunge finish 3rd in district individual bowling event

Cole Garwood and Alyssa Bunge each finished 3rd in the District Individual Bowling Tournament. On Sunday, the top bowlers in our District competed in a tournament as individuals in Forest City. The tournament is comprised of the top 2 bowlers of each team and 6 at-large bids based on seasonal average.  There are a total of 24 boys and 24 girls competing in the tournament.  The VS Bowling Team is fortunate to have some of the highest averages and we as a team competed with 4 boys and 5 girls.

Viking bowlers sweep Oelwein

Another successful evening for the VS Bowling teams. Clean sweep for all 4 teams. This is a great time for VS bowling team as we are wrapping up our regular season in the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow we head to Forest CIty for our district Individual Tournament with 9 of our varsity bowlers. The Varisty boys team was led by senior Tyler Rasmussen with a 427 series.

Hyland wins Wamac wrestling title at 145; Vikings 10th in team points

Nick Hyland is the Wamac 145-pound champion. Led by Nick Hyland’s first place finish, the Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team finished 10th in the Wamac Conference Tournament held in Vinton on Saturday. Hyland pinned his first three opponents to get to the championship round, then wrestled to a 1-1 tie over Cole Fritz of Solon. The match then went into the sudden victory round, where Hyland scored a takedown to win the match and the 145-pound title.

V-S Viking Swimmers Tuesday Night Swim Meet

Tuesday night was a chance for the Viking swimmers to perform on a big stage against 13 other teams representing 9 schools in the MVC.  The Vikings rose to the occasion early before some unfortunate luck ended the evening on a mixed note.  Facing opposition from the likes of defending State Champion Iowa City West, 52-time consecutive district champion CR Washington as well as Waterloo, CR Kennedy, Jefferson, Linn-Mar and both Dubuque schools the Vikings finished a respectable 9th out of 14 squads.
