Hyland wins Wamac wrestling title at 145; Vikings 10th in team points

Nick Hyland is the Wamac 145-pound champion. Led by Nick Hyland’s first place finish, the Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team finished 10th in the Wamac Conference Tournament held in Vinton on Saturday. Hyland pinned his first three opponents to get to the championship round, then wrestled to a 1-1 tie over Cole Fritz of Solon. The match then went into the sudden victory round, where Hyland scored a takedown to win the match and the 145-pound title.

V-S Viking Swimmers Tuesday Night Swim Meet

Tuesday night was a chance for the Viking swimmers to perform on a big stage against 13 other teams representing 9 schools in the MVC.  The Vikings rose to the occasion early before some unfortunate luck ended the evening on a mixed note.  Facing opposition from the likes of defending State Champion Iowa City West, 52-time consecutive district champion CR Washington as well as Waterloo, CR Kennedy, Jefferson, Linn-Mar and both Dubuque schools the Vikings finished a respectable 9th out of 14 squads.

VS bowlers continue to improve, win three of four vs. Waverly-Shell Rock

The Vinton Shellsburg Bowling Teams competed at Waverly Bowl on Friday. Our bowlers fought to keep ahead of the Waverly Shellrock and three of our four teams that competed were victorious. The Varsity boys team was led by senior Tyler Rasmussen who has really pushed himself this year and become and intergral member of this team. VSBC baseball, softball registration takes place this Saturday

2016 registration for VSBC/Marv Lindsey Softball and Baseball will be this Saturday at Tilford Elementary.  10U/9U/8U/7U baseball will register at 10:00 am, 13U/12U/11U baseball at 11:00 am and 3rd/4th/5th/6th grade softball will be held at 12:00 pm.  More information regarding cost and paperwork needed can be found on our website - www.

Griffith passes 1,000-point milestone; leads Wamac-West in scoring

Maci Griffith's teammates applaud after giving her a signed basketball marking her 1,000th point. Vinton-Shellsburg's Maci Griffith scored her 1,000 high school basketball point Tuesday night during the home game vs. Clear Creek-Amana. Maci received a signed basketball from her coach and teammates, and the fans and cheerleaders held up signs proclaiming the milestone, as the game was briefly interrupted to mark the occasion.   Along with her family, Maci's track, soccer and softball coaches were also on hand to celebrate the milestone.

Hawkeye Dirt Tour to open in Vinton, Memorial Day

Opening night for the seventh annual Hawkeye Dirt Tour brings Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds to their traditional home track on Memorial Day. The Monday, May 30 show marks the fifth occasion the tour has taken its first green flag of the season at Benton County Speedway. The Vinton oval was the site of the first-ever IMCA Modified event in 1979.

Viking swimmers split with Williamsburg, Oskaloosa

Tuesday night at the IBSSS pool the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings split a double-dual defeating Williamsburg 65-29 while falling to Oskaloosa 56-37. The Vikings captured 10 of 11 events from Williamsburg while racing out to an early commanding lead. The Vikes were up 22-12 at the first break and had the win all but secured by the second break leading by a score of 44-24.

Hyland sets new school record as Vikes do well at Solon Invitational

Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlters competed in the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational in Solon on January 16. Four Vikings, Luke Radeke, Carter Weeks, Brock Radeke, and Nick Hyland, each placed 3rdm and Kort Johnson finished 5th. Hyland suffered his first loss of the season, to Carter Happel, a 3-time state champ, from Lisbon. However, Hyland now has 146 career wins, a new VS record.

Viking bowlers continue to do well vs. Waterloo Columbus

Below are the stats from tonights meet.  We had an extended amount of time since the last meet due to the weather yet all three teams did very well and continue to improve each week.  The varsity boys team came through again and shot 100 pins above average. Nick Stein led the team with two consistent score of 225 and 236 for a total 461.
