Vikings to play Mustangs on new artificial turf tonight

If you drove by the Vinton-Shellsburg High School football field, and saw the unusual sight of players with gloves fielding ground balls, here's why: The Viking varsity baseball team will travel to Independence tonight and become one of the first teams to play on the Mustangs' new artificial field turf baseball diamond.

Vikette softball season with loss to Xavier

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes ended their 2016 softball season Thursday with a first-round loss to C.R. Xavier. Sophomore Alex Maynard pitched a complete game, but the Viking offense struggled, getting just three hits.

Gustin Wins Hogan Memorial Modifieds feature

 Richie Gustin didn’t recall a lot of drama while en route to winning the Hogan Memorial in 2012. The 2016 version of the Benton County Speedway special for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds had plenty of that, though, as Gustin outran Todd Shute and the 21st starting Hunter Marriott for the Sunday night victory at Vinton.

Vikings split with Benton, improve to 16-11

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings baseball team is 16-11 and hoping to keep improving as they seek to return to the State Tournament.

The Vinton-Shellsburg varsity baseball team won two of three games early this week and has double-headers tonight and a game at Mount Vernon on Friday before hosting rival Benton Community for a double-header on Monday.

In the movies, Dakoda Sellers would have won last night’s Sport Mod feature at the Benton County Speedway. But the “Drive for 5” themed car that honors the five young people who died in an accident last April – including Nikki Jacobsen, Quentin Ary and three young members of Seller’s pit crew –  Zoey and Hunter Tuttle and their older brother, Triston Randall – did not end up in Victory Lane.
