SHELLSBURG – Michael Ray “Mike” Cohrt, 58, of Shellsburg, formerly of Palo, died Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2014, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Keystone Cemetery.
Mike was born July 12, 1956, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Edward Herman and Martha Ida Furler Cohrt. He graduated from Benton Community Schools in 1974.
On January 6, 1997, Mike was united in marriage with Kathy Walton in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Mike farmed around the Van Horne and Palo areas, did asphalt work and was the groundskeeper at Tara Hills Country Club in Van Horne.
In his spare time, Mike loved riding his Harley, watching NASCAR races, playing cards and reading. He also loved muscle cars and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy Walton of Shellsburg; his mother, Martha Cohrt of Vinton; two sisters: Joyce Thompson of Ellsworth, WI; and Janet (Joe) Cohrt of Beloit, WI; two step-daughters: Melissa Crow of North English and Monica Crow of Cedar Rapids; 4 grandchildren: Breanna, Kyle, Lucas and Mason; mother-in-law Hazel Walton of Cedar Rapids; two nieces; 1 nephew; 1 great-niece; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Terry and Gary Cohrt; and his beloved dog, Kody.
A memorial fund has been established.
