Nancy Baldwin presented information on The Smile Train to the Vinton Presbyterian Church’s Friendship Fellowship group a few months ago, and the group decided to support this mission.

The Smile Train works to provide free cleft palate surgery and follow-up care to hundreds of thousands of poor children in developing countries. There are an estimated 170,000 new babies born with clefs each year in these countries.

Doctors from the United States have traveled to said countries and trained local doctors to perform the needed surgery to help their own people. Surgery for one child costs $250. In January of this year a collection was taken at Friendship Fellowship’s monthly meeting, and $250 was raised and sent to the Smile Train headquarters in New York City. Friendship Fellowship has received notes of thanks expressing their genuine appreciation for the gift.
