Kirkwood Community College to Honor 2,900 Graduates

  Kirkwood Community College will soon honor more than 2,900 students taking positive steps for their futures. The college will hold commencement ceremonies for its college credit and GED/adult high school programs in mid-May. Both ceremonies will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Kirkwood will confer more than 2,400 college credit degrees, diplomas and certificates for study in the past academic year.

New cameras to be added to VSHS with PPEL funding

     Long before security cameras helped solve last Friday's bomb threat at VInton-Shellsburg High School, principal Kirk Johnson and other administrators had begun working with security companies and the Vinton Police Department on obtaining and placing additional cameras.       The camera project is on the list of PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) projects the school board approved during its meeting Monday.

AmeriCorps Maple 4 to help with VPRD projects, events

AmeriCorps NCCC Maple 4 members clean the Vinton pool; the team will make many improvements there.      While many of the AmeriCorps NCCC teams have left VInton to spend several weeks working in other states, the Maple 4 team will be working through May and June with the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department.      The team began by cleaning at the pool, where they will spend much of the month of May. Painting of the pool, bath house, water slide as well as construction of lifeguard chairs and other projects at the pool are also on the schedule.

New ordinance would give city coordinator final say in P & R hiring choices

       The Vinton City Council will consider making a significant change in who has the ultimate authority over the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department when it holds its regular meeting this Thursday, May 12.     The council has been asked to consider an ordinance that will take the authority of the Vinton Parks and Recreation Board to hire a director and other personnel and give it to the city coordinator.

Brendas on Board: First meeting for new school board member, board secretary

The VS School Board, with its new participants, during Monday's meeting.      The faint sound of aluminum bats colliding with baseballs echoed into the Vinton-Shellsburg administrative building as the school board convened for its monthly meeting Monday evening. Baseball practice recently began across the parking lot from the board meeting room. But inside, the board had some items on its agenda that normally take place in September.

Duong, Long to remain in jail until sentencing July 7

     Looking down from the bench in the temporary federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids, Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles told the two defendants that it would be "ironic" if their criminal behavior resulted in two more months of freedom.      Facing Judge Scoles on Monday while wearing Linn County Jail jump suits and shackles around their ankles, waist and hands were Chan Duong, in bright orange; and Phung Ca "Polly" Long, who was wearing dark green.

Bike Safety Rodeo a Success

Sophia Vasquez is demonstrating proper bike safety by sporting a properly fitted helmet. Last Tuesday, a number of Vinton and local area youth came out with their bikes to the Vinton Recreation Center to participate in the annual Bike Safety Rodeo. Kids of all ages had the opportunity to practice their biking skills at a number of challenging stations, learned about bike safety, had their helmets checked for proper fitting and went home happy with some really cool prizes.

Division 1 rating for VSHS Concert Band

VSHS band members earned a near-perfect score at IHSMA event Saturday.      The Vinton-Shellsburg High School Concert Band and Director Karl Smith are celebrating the band's lates Division 1 rating, as well as a near-perfect score at the IHSMA (Iowa High School Music Association) State Large Group Festival.       "I'm so proud of the band students and parents," said Smith.
