Celebration Park Fund Drive closer to reaching its goal

Jeff Peterson, Celebration Park Fundraising Committee member, Deb & John Ketchen, Jon Clingman CPFC The Celebration Park Fundraising Committee is very excited about coming closer and closer to reaching the goal of $250,000 for the construction of the new community park located along the cedar River just west of the Vinton Fire Station.  John & Deb Ketchen have generously helped to make this a possibility with their $5,000 donation to the park.

Spring FORWARD this weekend (that means turn those clocks AHEAD an hour!)

Don't forget to get up at 2 a.m. on Sunday Morning to set your clocks AHEAD...then it will be 3 a.m.! After that, set your alarm so that you won't be late for church, climb back in bed and ask yourself, why do we do this every spring? Seems like we could just set them ahead at 10 p.m. on Saturday night....

BDG: County budget cut would eliminate director's position, threaten its future

Members of the Benton Development Group (BDG) say that the decision by the Benton County Board of Supervisors to reduce its funding of BDG from $47,000 this budget year to $20,000 for the coming year is a decision that threatens the future of the organization, as well as the job of its director. The BDG board met Thursday night, and its members plan to attend Tuesday morning's budget hearing and supervisors meeting to make their case for continued funding at the $47,000 level.

Tribute to a Country Doctor

In the small town of the Midwest, the doctor was by far the most important person we knew. We knew he could cure all of our ills and he did. He was first a doctor – then a myriad of other very helpful and interesting things; but the most outstanding attribute was that he was a character. I first knew of this man in the early 1930's and have never quit telling tales about him and his life.

Benton County Conservation Department to hire second naturalist

Karen Phelps, shown here teaching kids about snakes, will mentor a second naturalist. The Benton County Conservation Board's education program has been such a success that director Matt Purdy is now adding another naturalist. "Everyone loves Karen's programs," said Purdy on Thursday morning, referring to Karen Phelps, who has been the county's naturalist for many years. Lately, said Purdy, Phelps has spoken to approximately 800 students in area classrooms, and spent time with another 400 during school trips to the Nature Center.

  Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 214 calls for service and investigated 17 accidents.  Deputies attempted to serve 202 civil papers and issued 20 traffic citations and 42 traffic warnings. There were 20 arrests/juvenile referrals with 22 charges being filed in February 2013.  (5) were simple misdemeanors, (14) were indictable misdemeanors, and (3) were felony charges.

Cooling Dancers to Compete in Des Moines

  Hundreds of dancers from Iowa and neighboring states will fill the stages of Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center this Sunday for the regional “Midwest Starz” dance competition. Over 100 of the Cooling Dancers of Vinton have been hard at work preparing for this event, including a rehearsal onstage at the VSHS Aud. this past weekend.

Missing dog: Can you help find Louie?

Can you help find Louie?: Louie is a neutered dalmatian/Australian shepherd mix.  He looks like a dalmatian but smaller.  He doesn't have any tags or collar.Louie went missing in the Benton City Park area, Benton Co, southeast of Vinton. Please help him get home before the next storm hits, we are very worried! Basketball/weather update: School closed but VPRD busses to leave as scheduled

Light snow covers the windows of cars parked in Des Moines this morning, where perhaps a half-inch has fallen overnight -- much less than the snowfall in Benton County and other areas in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. While snow has canceled schools and the planned VS pep busses for today, the Vinton Parks and Recreation busses were still on regular schedules.
