Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive nets $1,200 for ARC

Special Olympics announces fund-raiser for bowling ramps

The East Central Iowa Special Olympics organization, which includes the local Vinton-Shellsburg United team, has announced a fund-raising campaign for its bowling programs. "We are trying to raise money to buy ramps for the East Central Area bowling," says Theresa Werner of Vinton. "It would benefit Vinton-Shellsburg because they have several ramp bowlers.

STORM: Vinton area men plan return to Kenya for mission trip in 2014

As we bundle up and head outside to move snow in subzero temperatures, many of us think of warmer climes: a beach, cruise ship or even a hot July day spent poolside.  However, most of us aren’t thinking of sparsely populated, arid, dusty remote areas.   John Karrick and Chris Cantrell, however, are pondering those dry areas, and thinking of the next STORM.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, when shared with friends

Area elves gather to create Christmas goodies & share some fun, then deliver their goodies!   Activity around Vinton at the Christmas season, never stops.   A couple of Saturdays ago, a group of merry elves gathered, as they have the past few years to have some fun and share some cheer. "We make goodies and share with each other. We all take a tray home and then we go out and deliver goodies to the elderly or those in need.

Alumni Basketball reunites scores of players from four decades

AJ Wygle, now an assistant VS coach, played for the Pink Team. The best part of an event such as Saturday's Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Basketball game, said Viking coach Joe Johnson, is seeing his former players again. It's also great, he said, meeting former Vikings who played before his arrival at VSHS. Johnson, in his eighth year of coaching, said he hopes the alumni game can become a regular or even annual event for Vinton-Shellsburg.

Superindent explains challenges of making weather-related schedule changes

For several days each school year, the first question a superintendent must ask is, “Will we have school today?” With snow, ice, freezing rain and fog all figuring in to Iowa's weather this past month, Vinton-Shellsburg Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock has begun several school days – and ended many evenings – asking those questions.

Annual VS FFA fruit sales top $32,000

  On Tuesday December 10, 2013 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had their annual fruit sales delivery. Many members came to school early on this day to unload box after box of fruit, meat, cheese, and peanuts into the schools woods shop room. This year we had $32,476.75 in total sales. We had twenty-six members reach their $500 goal, out of sixty-seven members that sold.

Alco to share 2% of Friday, Saturday sales totals with VS schools

The Alco store in Vinton, joining a company-wide effort to support the communities in which the stores are located, has announced its intention to share 2 percent of total sales from Friday and Saturday (Dec. 20-21) with the Vinton-Shellsburg School District. Manager Verdonn LeFevere contacted the school administration office on Thursday to announce the event.

Today, Thursday, December 19, there will be NO Evening activities or MS practices and all HS practices are scheduled to be done by 5:30 p.m.

We have the perfect solution for you – donate those redeemable cans/bottles to the Benton County 4-H Service Trip Can Drive this Saturday, December 21, at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Vinton from 9am-1pm. In February, Benton County high school 4-H'ers and non-4-H’ers will spend a weekend in Des Moines working with local shelters, feeding the homeless and various other tasks to help those in need.
