The best part of an event such as Saturday's Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Basketball game, said Viking coach Joe Johnson, is seeing his former players again. It's also great, he said, meeting former Vikings who played before his arrival at VSHS.

Johnson, in his eighth year of coaching, said he hopes the alumni game can become a regular or even annual event for Vinton-Shellsburg.

Approximately 70 players from 1984 through 2013 formed eight teams which competed in a double-elimination tournament.

Johnson thanked Dan and Myra Kearns for the work they put into organizing the event.

Champions from classes of 2006-2007

The winning team Saturday was the black team, consisting of members of the classes of 2006 and 2007. Ross Timmermans and Matt Sima were captains. Teammates included Dylan Rickels, Kam Winsor, Cody Johnson, Michael Lee, Alan Bentley, Doug Laughridge, David Urlaub and Brady Randall.

Both players and relatives watching them play said it was "like old times," playing again with former teammates.
