Bethlehem Lutheran Celebrates by giving

Boy Scout Troop 47 Scoutmaster receives 100+ 1 gift from Bethlehem Lutheran Church Pres.George Bauer Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Vinton in its centennial year, 2013, shared its celebration with the community in monthly gifts of $100 given to organizations and causes beyond the organization.  In its 101st year the congregation is continuing the monthly gifts in the amount of $101.  The February gift was given to Boy Scout Troop 47 of Vinton on Boy Scout Sunday, February 2.

Vinton farm celebrates birth of Red Angus triplet heifer calves

The Rich family members are especially excited about the birth of triplets -- triplet calves. The Rich Red Angus Farm southeast of Vinton is celebrating its newest youngsters, siblings Jane, Janice and JoAnn.  The Red Angus calves give a literal meaning to the phrase "one in a million." Cattle experts estimate the odds of having triplet calves at 1 in every 105,000 births. The odds of a cow having three female calves at one time: Nearly 1 in two million.

No school for VS today

Due to the snow, cold and wind, there will be no classes or activities for Vinton-Shellsburg students today, Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Breast Cancer Survivors February meeting canceled

Breast Cancer Survivors February meeting has been canceled because of weather concerns. The survivors will meet next month, on Tuesday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and conversation at Windsor Manor in the dining room.  Free will donation for the meal. Shellsburg students Jump Rope for Heart, raise more than $1,500

On Tuesday, January 28, students at Shellsburg Elementary jumped all over heart disease and stroke by participating in Jump Rope For Heart. The students raised more than $1,500 for the American Heart Association, which funds research, programs and education to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.     Shellsburg PE teacher Megan Albertsen organized the event.

FFA members place at District Bowling event

FFA bowlers John Eden, Emily Reisch and Ben Eden. On January 11, 2014, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had three members attend the District Bowling Tournament in Manchester. There, they competed against five other teams and placed first with a team score of 1013. Also, Ben Eden placed 2nd individually, and John Eden placed 7th individually. The members that attended were John Eden, Ben Eden, and Emily Reisch.

Pink Night: Vikettes continue tradition of supporting breast cancer survivors

Vikette Brea Burroughs escorts survivor Angie Tharp to the court on Pink Night. For the fifth season in a row, Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball players escorted breast cancer survivors to the basketball court during Pink Night. The event raises funds for mammography services for women who cannot afford them; it also recognizes local breast cancer survivors. "The best thing about this is that it led to the survivors support group," said Vikette Coach Deb Schirm, who helped organize the first Pink Night in 2010.

Love of trees inspires Arbor Care, LLC owner

Mark Pingenot prunes a young maple; he now works full-time for his tree care business. Mark Pingenot stood under a maple tree on Friday, with a pair of loppers in his hand, administering what he called "tough love." He was removing one of what tree professionals call "double leaders" -- twin trunks rising from the base of the tree. Across the street stood a decades old maple, which was damaged by the storm of 2011.
