Playing hockey with the RoughRiders

Vinton, Iowa Some Vinton Parks and Rec Floor Hockey League participants had the chance to play with a few of the Cedar Rapids. RoughRiders on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The players answered questions, signed autographs and played for a few minutes with third and fourth graders.  The RoughRiders were also in Vinton to encourage local residents to attend the March 1 "Vinton Night" game.

Branstad to visit Benton County, tour Click Stop Thursday

The Benton County Economic Board (BDG) announced that in cooperation with Click Stop of Urbana, they will host Governor Terry Branstad on February 27.  The Governor will be stopping at Click Stop as a part of his efforts to highlight the importance of economic development for the State of Iowa.  Click Stop has been recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in the United States.

Former Newhall couple identified in C.R. murder-suicide

The Cedar Rapids Police Department has identified the couple that perished in a murder-suicide Friday as Dennis and LuElla Koopman, formerly of rural Newhall. Witnesses reported hearing 10 or more gunshots between 3 and 4 p.m. Friday in the 6100 block of Dean Road in SW Cedar Rapids, in a parking lot near one of the many apartment complexes there.

Winning shot: Former Viking Urlaub nets $7k diamond ring with half-court shot

$7,000 shot: Former VS Viking David Urlaub wins a diamond ring at UNI BB game. David Urlaub has made many shots on a basketball court in his career. The former Vinton-Shellsburg Viking earned All-District honors in high school then played in college for a while.  He, however, made what could be the biggest shot of his lifetime Sunday night in Cedar Falls. Chosen as the half-court shot contestant at a UNI men's basketball game, David found nothing but net, and won the prize: A $7,000, 1-carat solitaire diamond ring.

Shellsburg American Legion Riders quilt raffle to benefit veterans

The Iowa Quilt The Department of Iowa Mid Winter Conference was held Feb. 14,15 & 16th in Des Moines. During the Legion and Auxiliary Joint meeting held on Friday, our Chapter was one of three who received a recognition plaque for our donation to The Legacy Scholarship Fund. In order to be eligible to receive this, a donation of $750.00 or larger is required.

VS elementary 'flash mob' to celebrate character lessons

Over the past several years, our elementary specials team’s professional work has focused around character education and learning new ways to help each student be successful. Our team goal has been to engage students in thinking about their own talents, beliefs and the footprint they can leave on this earth. We thought the best way to celebrate our learning and embrace our whole schools vision for a bully-free and character driven school would be through our first ever Vinton-Shellsburg Elementary FLASHMOB!  The 3rd-5th grade students at Shellsburg and Tilford Elementary learned the dance in gym class this month with Mrs.

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA highlights from 2013-14

FFA members, from Greenhands to seniors, are busy throughout the year. As our members looks back and reflect on the school year that has past, they can’t help but think about all of our accomplishments and the great year that we have had so far. We have gained many new FFA members, had many activities and have had many achievements. Some of these highlights are our Local Greenhand Night, Pancake Breakfast, National Convention, and our Animal Learning Lab.
