News: $100+1 : Bethlehem Lutheran Celebrates by giving in April
In it's 101st year, Bethlehem Lutheran Church continues to present monthly gifts to deserving community organizations.
On April 27, 2014, the church presented the fourth gift of 2014 to the Vinton Public Library. The library was dedicated on July 4, 1904.As technology has changed in the last several decades, our library has not just idly sat back , but has embraced these changing times with open arms. Last month we passed our 4th anniversary at Vinton Today.
Over the last 4 years we've watched in amazement as we went from nothing to operating a website with traffic that boasts over 9 MILLION visits. Now that's pretty impressive if I say so myself.
All of our news is local, we don't troll the TV stations for something to fill the page.
VU's Destination Vinton to host first bus tour in Vinton May 6th
Vinton Unlimited's Destination Vinton Committee has some exciting news...the buses are coming to town!
That's right...our Destination Vinton committee has been working very hard over the past couple of years to begin marketing all of the great things we have to offer visitors to our community. After countless hours of work, phone calls, emails, and promotion, we're excited to bring the first bus tour of 2014 to town on Tuesday, May 6th!
They will be arriving in town around 9:30 am and begin their day at the Iowa Braille & Sight Saving School.
Urban Plunge: Benton County 4-H members help the needy in Des Moines
Several Benton County 4-H members spent one weekend in April in Des Moines' inner-city visiting, helping and learning from faith-based organizations that are working among the poor. They hung out with the homeless, fed the hungry and handed out clothes to the poor. Benton 4-H team members were able to discover their passion and gifts as well as how to use their passion/gifts to back home in Vinton. How a traditional newspaper (which we are not) gets its funding...
(Just in case anyone out there is still not sure about this:
We are not, no more, not, not at all, not either, in no way, not even in the slightest little bit associated with any newspapers...)
Over the past 4 years, the Karrs at Monkeytown and Closes at Vinton Today have had what we describe as as "loosey-goosey" partnership.
Band and Art on display for Extravaganza
Middle School students displayed their art work and middle school and high school band members performed a variety of songs during the annual VS Band Extravaganza Monday evening.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands performed, followed by the VS High School band, which played numbers it will perform in the upcoming Festival in Marion.
Amy Sharar's art students had their projects on display in the lunch room; many families browsed the displays as the students explained their projects to parents and grandparents. Laura Ingalls Wilder presenter visits Vinton
Vinton—Marie Tschopp donned apparel from the late 1800’s to appear as Laura Ingalls Wilder at the Horridge House in Vinton on Sunday, April 27th. Marie gave a lively presentation of how the Ingalls family lived, worked, and laughed as Laura grew up in the upper Midwest. A crowd of adults and many children came to hear the stories of the Ingalls. Jump Rope for Heart Tilford students raise $3,800 for AHA
Led by the $255 raised by Kaity Lewis, the Tilford Elementary second, third and fourth grade classes raised a total of $3,804.50 for the American Heart Association. They did this by participating in the Jump Rope for Heart campaign in late March.
Tilford students normally do this every year, although last year they were too busy with the "John Counts" fund-raiser to participate, said PE teacher Mindy McClintock. A word of thanks, and a request for your assistance

Benton County Fair seeks candidates for 2014 Queen
The Benton County Fair is looking for young women who are interested in serving as a representative of the fair by becoming the Benton County Fair Queen. As a representative for the Benton County Fair, the queen will be asked to assist with various contests and activities during the county fair in July as well as helping with other promotional activities.
