Seed House roof nears completion; owners discuss windows, controversy

After receiving a May 1 deadline for repairing the roof of the storm and flood damaged historic seed house building, Joe and Peggy Schott have apparently earned a reprieve as city officials see the roof project nearing completion.  The north side has been covered with composite tiles designed for a historical appearance; crews continue installing the grey roofing material on the south side of the roof this week.

Patient Care Academy: All VSHS class members earn CNA certification

Alyssa, Brea, Olivia, Jaeger, Rickey and Abby, with 'Stanley,' their artificial patient. The Patient Care Academy Class at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, and instructor Kris Hallberg are celebrating the recent certification of every class member after each passed the  State of Iowa Nurse Aide Certification Exam, which is necessary to become a Certified Nurse's Aide. The year-long class is one of the joint ventures between V-S and Kirkwood Community College.

Vinton council hires new city administrator

Chris Ward: Will begin as Vinton City Coordinator Monday. Chris Ward has been hired as the new Vinton City Administrator to replace Andy Lent ,who resigned as city coordinator last fall. "He will start Monday," said City Council member Dave Redlinger. Council member Tami Stark said the council decided to change the job title to city administrator after Lent left. In 2001 and 2002, Ward worked for the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments in  Waterloo.

Bike Safety Rodeo: Young riders learn safety, handling skills

Haley Englebert weaves between obstacles during the VPRD Bike Safety Rodeo. With the help of the Vinton Kiwanis Club and Vinton Police Officer James Livingston, the Vinton-Shellsburg Parks and Recreation Dept. held its annual Bike Safety Rodeo Tuesday, outside the Rec Center. The participants had the chance to practice a variety of courses designed to test and improve their handling and traffic skills. Officer Livingston inspected bikes and helmets.

May is Cemetery Appreciation Month

Oscar the Grouch: Belongs in the garbage can, not the recycling bin

Clothing, including Oscar the Grouch Christmas PJs, was placed in a Vinton recycling bin recently. Do you remember that Sesame Street song, "One of these things does not belong?"  One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong, Can you tell which thing is not like the others By the time I finish my song? That song showed children a set of images, but one of those items was not like the rest.

Lions Club metal recycling project under way; drop-off set for May 8-10

Roger Uthoff, Rick Ohrt and Pat Lyons are among the Lions working on the metal recycling project. The Vinton Lions get collections started for the upcoming scrap metal fundraiser with industrial debris at Ideal Industries, the collection site. The service club is seeking donations from the public. Smaller items that fit in 4x4” cartons, as pictured here with  Roger Uthoff, Rick Ohrt and Pat Lyons,  can be dropped off at Ideal Industries Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10.

Prom 2014: Grand March, dance and Post-prom at VSHS

Post Prom, 2014: Lexi Hicok tries to keep two balloons in the air at the same time. Freshly-polished pickup trucks. Stretch limousines. Colors from black and white to camouflage and orange to everything in between. These vehicles and prom dresses and tuxedos appeared in Vinton Saturday evening, at the high school as well as restaurants, stores and gas stations throughout the area as Vinton-Shellsburg students made their way to the 2014 Prom.
