A kind, decent man...
Back in 2007, Vinton was Ground-Zero for the run-up to the 2008 Iowa Caucuses. I don’t know what it was, but back when we were running The Vinton Eagle (that we founded, but never get credit for), it seemed like about all we did was talk to presidential candidates. At one point we were averaging two or three visits a week; I started to feel like I was in the campaigns. Wesley United Methodist Church seeking donations
The Wesley United Methodist Church which holds a Food Pantry at their church is seeking donations of jams and jellies for the month of January. You are welcome to drop off any donations at the church which is located next to the library.
These little piggies should've stayed home
Thursday morning found a load of hogs on their way to market, we assume. The semi driver took a detour into the ditch on 22nd Ave. Trail, aka the Mt. Auburn road just south of Kersten's light display. The driver, James Rose of Arlington left the roadway heading south when he went into the ditch on the west side of the road. Update:12/27/19This morning at about 10:42 AM, divers from the Johnson County Dive Team recovered the body of Shannan Lee Hughes, age 47, of rural Vinton IA, at a private pond located at 6235 33rd Ave Dr, Shellsburg IA.In a news release from the Benton County Sheriff's Department, they released the following information. "On 12-26-19, at about 5:34 PM, Benton County 911 received a report of a possible drowning at a private pond about 1 mile northeast of Shellsburg IA.
City Council Moves to Reconsider Elwick Appointment
Thursday night, December 26, the Vinton City Council held a 10 minute meeting which can be seen here covering a variety of topics. Hessenius added a new item to the agenda as number seven on the agenda for the evening. This is addressed in the final paragraph of this article.Near the top of the discussion was the appointment of Andrew Elwick to the City Council.
Help Prevent Car Break-ins
Benton County Sheriff’s Office have seen an increase in the number of thefts from parked cars. In many cases the vehicles were left unlocked and thieves simply helped themselves. The most frequent types of personal items stolen include wallets, purses, driver's license, insurance and registration information, computer laptops, cell phones, license plates, and garage door openers that may be used at a later date to gain access into a home.

On 12-24-2019, at about 10:00 PM, The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a reckless driver on Hwy 30 near 30th Ave. The vehicle reported to have been driving recklessly was reported to have turned south towards Norway IA. A check of the license plate given showed the vehicle to have been reported stolen.Benton County Deputies would later locate the vehicle in Norway IA, and the suspects would attempt to elude Deputies, a brief vehicle chase ensued.
Faces of Benton County Nominee: Vanessa Jones
Meet Vanessa Jones, a Vinton resident who has struggled with mental illness in the past, but today is making great strides and creating nurturing environments for elementary school children. Vanessa is the sixth nomination to the Family Nurturing Council’s Faces of Benton County campaign. Vanessa was nominated by Dea Burroughs, head cook at Tilford Elementary School.
