Paving project begins at Tilford Elementary

Beginning Monday, October 19 through Thursday, October 29, a portion of the Tilford east driveway will be paved.  Due to the construction, our bus loading and unloading routines will need to be adjusted.  Students will be dropped off directly in front of the main entrance in the morning, and parents should be aware that this could cause possible delays during morning drop-off.

Monday Morning Accident Results in Damaged CRPD Vehicle, Uninjured Officer

On Monday, October 12, at approximately 6:34 a.m. Cedar Rapids Police Officer Jonathan McDowell struck a light pole in the median near E. 4th Street and S. 8th Avenue in Vinton.  Officer McDowell was not injured, but the police vehicle sustained significant damage.  The accident was investigated by the Vinton Police Department.McDowell is assigned as a School Resource Officer at a Cedar Rapids high school.

Patriot Tour roars into town with motorcycle escort

The West Side Hogs accompanied the Patriot Tour into Vinton. The Parade was enjoyed by all ages If you forgot that the Patriot Tour was arriving on Saturday, you had a reminder of its arrival, with the roar of all the bikes and the sirens that escorted the tour into town. Several bikers from around the area joined in the escort. Some from all over the Benton County area. The tour displayed all of their patriotically decorated vehicles on 4th St.

Auditor Speaks to local Kiwanis Club, Answers What is a naked ballot and more

Boxes that used to carry ballots from the polling place are now used to store absentee ballots. With more than 20 questions sent to the Auditor by the local Kiwanis club the Benton County Auditor Hayley Rippel took time out of her day to answer and educate the listeners about voting. She talked about how ballots are handled, the cost to send and return them ($1.20 each way) and many other details. Remember if you have an absentee ballot it MUST be postmarked on or before November 2nd.

ITC Midwest Supports Derecho Response with Disaster Relief Funding

Grants provided to support human services, tree replanting As many Iowans continue to recover from the severe damage caused by the August derecho, ITC Midwest is committing $75,000 in disaster relief funding to support communities and those impacted throughout its service territory. This fall, ITC Midwest is contributing to human service agencies that are providing direct assistance to benefit families in need, as well as tree replanting in the storm zone.

Round Up for Hope receives local support and raises funds

Fareway participated in the VGHF’s “Round Up for Hope” campaign collecting $733 in donations It’s October! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! The Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation is taking this opportunity tothank the Vinton Fareway and Farmers Saving Bank & Trust for their efforts in raising funds and ensuring that everyone in Benton County has access to 3D mammography for early detection that saves lives.

Patriot Tour Coming to Vinton

Patriot Tour will arrive in Vinton on Saturday afternoon On Saturday, the Patriot Tour Parade will be rolling into town. Vehicles will be on display on 4th St. between 1st and 2nd Ave. The street will be closed from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and the trucks arriving as part of the parade will be available for viewing from 1:00 until 4:30 p.m. Vinton was chosen to host the (www.thepatriottour.com) parade which honors veterans, police, fire, ambulance and first responders.

Fire Prevention Week 2020 Style

It's Fire Prevention Week at Tilford Elementary Because of COVID and the precautions this year, fire prevention education took place outside the classroom at Tilford Elementary this year. The children were taught the usual fire precautions in education, but it looked a little differently.The firemen of the local Vinton Fire Department dressed up in their gear so that the children could see what they look like should they encounter them during a fire.

V-S FFA Holds Local Greenhand Fire-Up

By: Co-Reporter, Annabelle Newton On September 17, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held their annual Local Greenhand Fire-Up Night at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School. This is open to any Greenhand, which is a first year member in the FFA chapter. Greenhand night welcomes new members to the chapter, while also showing them the ropes of FFA. Seven Greenhands began the night by doing a get to know each other ice breaker.
