Vinton Lions Club distributes 48 trees to area residents

Vinton Lions Club distributed 48 trees through the Trees Forever grant program to Vinton-Shellsburg area residents. Trees Forever care about the environment, our rural lands, the communities we live in and our fellow citizens. They are headquartered in Marion, Iowa and founded in 1989. We are grateful for the Trees Forever grant program allowing Vinton Lions Club to support replanting of trees in our community.

Vinton Lions Club celebrates 100th Year July 6

Lions member read to, or read to by, eager young scholars.Sometimes it's a dad or mom or grandparent and children's experience.   Vinton Lions Club invites the community to help us celebrate our 100 Years of Service on July 6, 2021, from 5-8 PM at Celebration Park.

Raising Hope in Benton County

Diana and Dennis Bramow in March 2015 and (at right) in April, 2021 The Party in Pink 5K event is an annual fundraiser for the Gifts of Hope program through Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation, Virginia Gay Hospital, and its family medical clinics in Atkins, Van Horne, Urbana, and Vinton. The program offers assistance to women in Benton County for health services related to cancer diagnostics and treatment. In addition, it provides an opportunity to remind friends and neighbors of how truly critical early detection is in surviving a breast cancer diagnosis.

Evergreen Cemetery in Need of Funds to replace Equipment

Evergreen Cemetery is in need of equipment to maintain the grounds of the resting places of many of our families. "We are going to put together a cookbook called, "Resting Residents," where families can submit a recipe with a short fact about their family that is now resting at Evergreen Cemetery."The cemetery is trying to raise at least $6,000 for a new mower and they also need to upgrade their 1974 and 1978 trucks.

More than 4,700 graduates receive degrees at Iowa State University this spring

Iowa State University recognized 4,798 spring graduates on May 7 and 8. Iowa State awarded 4,176 undergraduate degrees, 609 graduate degrees and 143 veterinary medicine degrees. Students had the opportunity to attend in-person ceremonies and celebrations at Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium, which were live-streamed for those who preferred a virtual option.

Vinton Lions Club tree order pick up this Saturday

If you have been chosen to receive a tree through the Vinton Lions Club, the distribution of the trees is this Saturday, June 5th at the Vinton Shellsburg High School Parking lot between 8 am and noon. When you drive up, a volunteer will be available to take your name and will have you draw a number that is assigned to one of the trees on the parking lot.

Vinton Legion holds Annual Memorial Day Service

Lt. Col. Constance Arens (Retired) addressed those gathered at the American Legion for Memorial Day The Vinton Legion George G. Luckey Post held their annual Memorial Day service at the Legion location. The service began by singing the Star-Spangled Banner and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Post recognizing each branch of the military with their branch song and the members rising as it was played.Placing an empty chair in honor of the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers and placing a flag on it with the POW/MIA emblem on it, those present recognized those that have gone missing in action and those unaccounted for.

Miller fills Christian Ed Director at Wesley United Methodist Church

Kaitlynn Miller, Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church Kaitlynn Miller, has stepped into the position of the Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church. Part of her job has been to figure out a way to be entertaining while teaching teenagers. Another, not so fun part is of the job description is to find ways to raise money to support the youth and their endless energy. On Sunday the youth and the church as a whole celebrated their first fundraising effort which resulted in over $5,000 for the youth.
